We have a 5 year old son who really enjoys these books. They are short enough to keep his interest, and at their core each is about friendship. So far we have been reading these to him, but I imagine these will be some of the first books he reads on his own.Highly recommended.
From Sam (5 years old): I liked all of the three books. I liked all of the stories, but my favorite one was about the snow. Toad wanted to be in his warm bed. He doesn't want to be cold. Frog wants him to leave home and play in the snow. Toad said Frog was right. It is fun in the snow. Toad didn't notice but he was all alone, and he bonked into a tree and a rock. The sled dived into the snow. Toad went home because bed is better than snow. The next one is The Corner, but that's not my favorite. My favorite was the snow because I love snow. You will like this book if you like snow. Frosty the snowman would also like this book. If you like this chapter, read it.From Mom: Sam is a new reader. He used these books as his lights-on books before bed last night and fell in love with the characters. This morning he brought them downstairs and told me all about the stories he had read on his own. We read through them again, that's how much he enjoyed them the first time. If you have a new reader in the house, these books are a fantastic beginning to a lifelong love of books.
My 2nd grader hated to read, and whined whenever he had to. He read a Frog and Toad story in class and came home and asked if I could get him some. This is the same Frog and Toad Collection that you will probably remember from your childhood as you began to learn to read! Children from about kindergarten through 2nd grade will appreciate these stories and find them engaging and funny! Frog and Toad are very likeable characters that each have a personality of their own. The stories are not too long - they span about 5 pages long. Each book has about five stories in it. The illustrations are small as the text needs to be big enough for a beginner reader but they are beautifully done nonetheless. A definite must for your young reader that is just diving into the wonderful world of books.
Love this classic books! If you are a homeschool family, Moving Beyond The Page calls for this book. Very classic great books great for young readers. (Both my 4 and 6 yo loved them!)I got this at less than $9 (as of dec 2018) , for 3 classic books, this is a great price.This would also make a great holiday/birthday gift.
My daughter desperately wanted to read chapter books like her older cousins and this set made the perfect gift to help her do so. The vocabulary is appropriate for a 4, 5, or 6 year old and the story plots are simple and straight forward. Frog and Toad are friends who help each other throughout the books, which subtly sends the right messages about interpersonal relationships. Many parents will probably remember these books from when they were kids, which makes reading at bedtime even more fun. Maybe I'm a bit nostalgic, but I find it soothing to wind down with these stories rather than yelling at swiper or watching psychedelic alien dancers jump around on TV.
This collection of Arnold Lobel stories is a terrific value! They are perfect for reading to a kindergarten or first grade class, as the children are really engaged with the silly adventures of Frog and his friend, Toad.
Wow, we love these books. The stories are very simple and short. We read them to our 4 year old as bedtime stories. There is one story that contains the line, "my best friend is trying to kill me." It's supposed to funny, but I'd rather not have references to killing in a book for kids. Otherwise, we've been cycling through these 3 books at bedtime for 2 months and my daughter is not losing interest yet. Mommy and daddy don't mind reading them either, which is not always the case.
