Amazon.com Review

Writings on the year 2000 (Y2K) problem, or the "millennium bug" as some would have it, have been limited to highly technical analyses of specific problems and their solutions. Very little attention has been paid to how the Y2K problem will affect the lives of average people and everyday systems, even though many prognosticators believe this is where the problem will have the largest impact. In Time Bomb 2000: What the Year 2000 Computer Crisis Means to You, Edward and Jennifer Yourdon do just that by presenting a collection of scenarios ranging from the best we can hope for to the worst cases. Each chapter investigates a different area of computing and the possible effects of this disaster on each. From home PCs to world financial networks, the Yourdons explore a variety of "domino effects" that January 1, 2000, could trigger and the necessary time, effort, and cost to fix the aftermath. The impacts on real life could be anywhere between annoying and catastrophic, and the authors examine each extreme. Each chapter contains "fallback advice," describing the amount of time required to repair these systems. (The authors liken Y2K to a hurricane--it only lasts a day, but requires a year of cleanup.) Although the Yourdons insist that their overall view is optimistic, it's hard not to feel doomed when reading some of the worst-case scenarios brought on by the year 2000 problem. While Time Bomb 2000 is meant to be an alert, it's not time to start stockpiling canned goods yet, and we can probably still party like it's 1999 right on schedule. However, we should remain extremely mindful of what may await us the next morning.

Optimists may be gleefully eyeing the approaching millennium with great expectations of the innovation that will undoubtedly accompany its dawning, but those with perhaps a more grounded gaze see January 1, 2000, as the day of reckoning for computers and their infinite applications everywhere. The Yourdons (Edward is the author of 25 computer books) offer a doomsday scenario of what life might be like if techno gurus aren't able to correct, on a universal scale, an oversight born when programmers failed to see the significance of the double zeros at the beginning of year 2000. Will ATMs work on January 1 of that year? Will medical devices work? Social Security checks arrive? Will basic services like electricity, water, mail, and food delivery be affected? No one is claiming to know everything for sure, but the Yourdons' harrowing account of what life could be like if computers all shut down at once is both frightening and useful for the solutions it offers. For all computer collections.?Geoff Rotunno, "Tri-Mix" Magazine, Goleta, Cal.Copyright 1998 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I bought this book a year ago to find out what I was up against when trying to deprogram a friend who had the heck scared out of him by Y2K. After looking at the book for an hour and realizing it was based entirely on conjecture and scare psychology, I sent it back (very thankful for Amazon's generous return policy). This book no doubt mostly appealed to paranoid people who were already distrustful of technology. Now that the event has past and nothing of note happened, I am sure there will be a new crisis some budding author will wield to manipulate this same sort of person out of their money. If you were duped once, please don't let it happen again by falling for the "insurance" argument used by this author (be prepared "just in case"). Remember, if the premise is unsubstantiated, it is not logical to act upon. One could make the same, equally "plausible" argument about preparing for an alien invasion--just in case.

Call it Y2k. Call it the Millennium Bug. Call it the end of civilization as we know it. The media is full of dire Y2k horror stories. Y2K consultants and Cobol programmers over-hype the problem, while governments and industry organizations downplay it. Everyone seems to have an opinion on the problem, whether or not they are well informed. It will either be one of the greatest challenges the computing industry has ever faced, or a non-event that scarcely causes people to raise an eyebrow. That's where "Time Bomb 2000 : Revised and Updated" comes in.In this New York Times Bestseller, Yourdon & Yourdon present a balanced viewpoint, looking at the Y2K problem from many different angles. They are careful to avoid over-sensationalizing the problem, but neither do they downplay or trivialize the seriousness of Y2K, and how it can affect real people and businesses. Each chapter of the book addresses a specific area which may be affected by the Y2K problem. The authors carefully cover each area in great detail, discussing the implications for the industry and for those who rely upon it.Such areas include banking and business, education, food, government, jobs, postal services, telephone, transportation, utilities, and the international implications of Y2K.The authors also point out an important factor that we should all be mindful of - you can still be affected by a Y2K crisis, even if you neither own nor use a computer. Breakdowns in essential services, such as power, banking and food distribution may have disastrous implications. While this prospect seems rather pessimistic, 'Time Bomb 2000' is packed with advice on how to best prepare for a Y2K crisis. Each industry is given specific attention, based on a two-day disruption, a one month disruption of service, and a one year failure. This book is an invaluable guide to the Y2K crisis, and offers an objective look at what might occur. The authors are careful to point out that such dire predictions may not eventuate, and encourage the reader to think carefully and objectively about the issues discussed in the book. It also includes an clear guide to the technical reasons behind Y2K, and excellent pointers to online resources so that readers can access the latest research and discussion about the millenium bug. All in all, "Time Bomb 2000" is an invaluable and objective guide to the Y2K crisis. If you're interested in the implications of Y2K on you, your career, or your family, this guide to the millenium bug is for you!

When I wrote my own self-sufficiency books a couple years ago (f.x., HOW TO DEVELOP A LOW-COST FAMILY FOOD STORAGE SYSTEM), I was already pretty well "into" preparedness. Sure, we had ice storms, bad weather spells where we couldn't have gotten down our road in a tank, and floods that blocked passage for weeks on end.....But, I never, never, thought that some minor computer glitch could end up being the Problem of the Millennium. In fact, up until about 18 days ago, I was proudly telling friends that the whole y2k thing was nothing more than a giant bogus media frolic, trotted out on slow news days to hook the masses so they wouldn't switch channels during commercials. I have suffered a rude awakening. The Yourdon's book has been the route to this rather shocking turn of mind -- and it is because the book was written for ME (and those like me) who have a smattering of knowledge about computer function, but no real idea of where the y2k problem is going to lead. Now, unfortunately, I have an idea of where it's going, and I kinda wish I was still in blissful ignorance...sorta. Preparedness is a lifestyle, after all is said and done -- and prepared is prepared. I just thought the calamity I was preparing for was of a more earth-changing nature, something impossibly large and grand, on the order of an asteroid or comet striking the earth.........but all it is going to be is the consequence of a series of tiny decisions made by a pack of computer nerds two decades ago. Funny how things work out. But, TIME IS WASTING!!! You need this book TODAY! You still have a short time to prepare!

I know that sounds superficial, but she, like most other people I know, just doesn't have a clue about the year-2000 issue. This book will help. I've worked with computers for 30 years, and I think of the 90s as a kind of golden age: quick and affordable healthcare if I get sick, television, the internet, travel, a fun way to make a living. But now, as I work on a year-2000 conversion project, I wonder what kind of civilization we're looking at two years away. There's a kind of eerie calm before the apocalypse.I hesitated to give this book a 10. It isn't a page-turner. You have to really work at it. But it's very carefully written, and in it's pre-publication incarnation on the internet it elicited lots of good comment from knowleable people, and much of this is now part of the book. The Yourdons touch on things which affect us in major ways -- utilities, transportation, banking, government services, and so on. My guess is that Time Bomb 2000 will be one of the best, maybe the best, of a glut of titles that are beginning to come out now that the rest of the world is catching on.Time Bomb is an excellent non-technical presentation about a difficult and painful subject. It's great that someone who understands technology and computers can write so well about social issues as Ed Yourdon (never mind that a techie can write well at all). The Yourdons are starting to shake things up.

Zane and the Hurricane: A Story of Katrina, by Rodman Philbrick

From School Library Journal

Gr 5–8—A boy's visit to meet his great-grandmother for the first time turns into a nightmare when Hurricane Katrina hits New Orleans. Twelve-year-old Zane has not known many family members other than his mother; after she makes contact with his deceased father's grandmother, Zane travels to the oppressively humid city. When New Orleans is placed under a mandatory evacuation, Zane and his great-grandmother leave with his dog, Bandy, and her pastor; when Bandy is spooked by growling Dobermans, he leaps from the car, followed by Zane. Zane and Bandy endure the hurricane's landfall and the failure of the levees at his great-grandmother's house until they meet a young girl, Malvina, and her guardian, Tru. The trio canoes through the snake-infested waters seeking assistance. Arriving in a neighborhood protected by privately hired security forces leads to vicious threats from the armed guards, who are loading helicopters stuffed with rugs and other expensive items. After their canoe is stolen, they head to the chaos of the Superdome and eventually to a bridge connecting the city to Algiers, in which they hope to find Tru's cousin. Vivid descriptions of the toxic waters, the commotion at the Superdome, and racial tension are handled factually yet sensitively. Information about unique New Orleans customs, including "jazz funerals," its history of biracialism, and accents are occasionally inserted. The fast bond among Zane, Malvina, and Tru is believably drawn. A time line and facts about Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath are included.—Jennifer Schultz, Fauquier County Public Library, Warrenton, VA

From Booklist

Thirteen-year-old Zane Dupree and his trusted dog, Bandy, travel from their home in New Hampshire to New Orleans to visit his great-grandmother, Miss Trissy, the only link to the father who died before he was born. But almost as soon as they arrive, they are caught up in the turmoil of Hurricane Katrina, separated from family, and left on their own to survive. The pair weathers the storm in Miss Trissy’s attic, and they are rescued, via canoe, by Mr. Tru, a celebrated brass player, and his young charge, Malvina, with a story of her own. Together they face difficulties both natural and human, from terrifying swirls of snakes in the putrid floodwater to organized militia “protecting” affluent neighborhoods from looters. Philbrick examines issues of race and class with a deft hand (Zane is of mixed race himself), letting the story unfold directly and leaving moralizing to the reader. Though the convenience of a few plot points strains credibility, the tight prose, harrowing pace, and resonant relationships will appeal to a broad audience. Grades 5-8. --Thom Barthelmess

Zane comes from the NE to visit his great grandmother and soon finds himself separated from her, and right in the midst of Hurricane Katrina. This non-stop adventure features a believable and lovable nearly thirteen-year-old boy. An elderly man and a young girl rescue him from the attic where he is about to drown. He learns a lot about a kind of life he has never before seen, and of how to survive in the worst that nature can throw at him. So well-written.

This book was amazing I loved it. It was sometimes hard to read but was still brilliant. I would read this book more than once just to understand but still a great book. Was sad at some points but that was the whole point. Still loved it.

This story helped personalize Hurricane Katrina for those who did not experience it. Through Zane, readers can empathize with all who faced the storm and its aftermath. One of Philbrick’s best stories.

Zane and the Hurricane is a gut wrenching story of survival by a boy and his dog with the aide of an old musician and a scrawny joke telling girl. I'm glad this book is on the Missouri Mark Twain nominee list for 2016-17 for 4th through 6th grade readers. Once you start reading this book, it will be hard to put down. Clearly can be a one day read. My favorite parts were the bonds that were created between all the characters. "We blood!" If you love historical fiction then this book will be your favorite new read.

Wow, my son brought this book home from the library at school and I couldn't put it down. I had to download it so I could reading it while he was at school. Breathtaking and suspenseful. Great story and a great read. Thanks for writing it. You expressed the rawness of the sad situation and I felt water all the characters felt

A good solid read for teens. Definitely covers the very real fears of this disaster. It's about time for some good stuff to come out set in Katrina.

Kids don't remember Hurricane Katrina as they were too young when it blew lives apart. So this beautiful little book by Mr. Philbrick brings that awful disaster to life for all through the character of Zane. Of particular use to readers are the maps included with the book, one of the flooding of New Orleans, the other the track of the storm. It is a quick, but compelling read.

First let me say that Mr. Philbrick is one of my favorite authors!this book was written for young readers but I am enjoying it. As a 6th grade teacher I pre-read books to recommend to my students and this will be one of them. It is a well written and gentle way to have children read about Katrina and what the people of New Orleans had to go through not just getting through the storm but it's aftermath.

Physical examination is a very important part of clinics. But its importance is more and more neglected as technology advances. My student had ever asked me "since we finally have to arrange image or lab exams, why must we take the time to do a physical examination?" Through the introduction of this book, I can finally tell him the scientific base (Evident base) for physical examination and its necessity. If you have met such students, or you have such questions, this book is the best answer for you.

Improves on the last edition in most respects, however, the new set up makes sources more difficult to identify. It's still the most clear, concise and accessible application of EBM towards the physical exam you will ever find. A great resources for all learners, from students to attendings!

A wonderful read! I feel that my physical exam skills have improved dramatically. Also helps me find interesting tidbits to teach my students.

The content is a masterpiece .What is missing is the references to the literature .They are actually an integral part of the book and the publisher needs to quit putting them on websites

Great book. Must read for every medical students and doctors

Great book, no better book for both explaining physical exam technique as well as the utility of exams in guiding clinical practice!

This set of 60 volumes is a great acquisition for any person who is truly interested in classic or academic literature (well with the Canon wars, I suppose I have to say "traditional academic"). The format is dense and double columned, but that allows some interesting works to be included (quite an impressive swath of the literary panorama). Some of the works I found astonishing to be included in a set of supposed "essentials" were: the extremely long Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (down side: this edition has the notes on the back), Huizinga's The Waning of the Middle Ages, and the biography of Samuel Johnson. I've found the translations pretty solid, at least they're not 'hideous' as one reviewer says, and since they are translations more or less renowned I don't think this part was overlooked by the editors.Definitely the lowest point of the selection are the scientific works, not only illegible in most cases, but useless also. It would have been a thousand times better to include The Sleepwalkers by Arthur Koestler than the voluminous tome of works by Copernicus, Kepler and Ptolemy; maybe in the next edition they will do that (hopefully it will be made some day). Also regarding the selection, I find it agreeable that philosophical and more "historical" works are as represented as the 'aesthethic literarure' genres. I don't read much poetry, but some literary fiend could be appalled by the lack of modern poets. But this is a selection after all and, like the case of poetry, 20th century literature needs to be complemented in any household where the set is actually read.Maybe these books will seem flawed to other readers, but I'm quite happy with them.

I've been reading the GBWW for almost 25 years, and I can't imagine what life would be like without them. You can't go wrong with this set. It will set you on a mission for knowledge that is never ending.

This is a must for any self-respecting person building their personal library. This kind of collection of classical literature, philosophy and history is core to western civilization.

This is the second edition of the compendium of Great Books. The first volume titled "The Great Conversation" -- updated by the Editor in Chief of The Great Books, Mortimer Adler -- explains why the 60 volume collection is organized as it is and what the three criteria were, established over several years' compilation, for inclusion in the set. "Influence" was not a criterion for selection, otherwise Hitler, Stalin and Lenin would have been incorporated, among other notable authors who were omitted. Unless you read "The Great Conversation" and the two volume Syntopicon you will undoubtedly be bewildered about the organizational structure of these books. Be aware, this is not like a set of college textbooks. These are original works, dating from Homer in 900-800 B.C. through mid-20th century's Samuel Beckett. Much of it is difficult reading. It's a collection of the great ideas of western civilization, not simply books that encompass only one subject each. If you are looking for such a thing you will not only waste your money and time but you'll be very disappointed and your set will probably end up on eBay.The general organization of The Great Books is by date written, but there are so many cross-references of the "great ideas" and "great authors" that you can find any subject, idea or author by using the Syntopicon as your guide. Adler and the editors have narrowed what they consider the great ideas of western civilization down to 102. Astonishing, when you consider the writing and authors span about 2800 years of western thought. The readings include virtually all of the subjects considered the liberal arts: literature of all kinds; philosophy and theology; mathematics and the natural sciences; history, biography and the social sciences; and economics, sociology and anthropology. If you're not in a college program that uses the Great Books in their curriculum, Adler provides a ten year reading plan for the books in "The Great Conversation." Again, not for the faint of heart, but I guarantee if you manage to get through all 60 books you will truly be educated. As an FYI, I'm currently in what seems to be the sole graduate program in the country that uses only the Great Books in their curriculum. It is also a distance-learning program and uses the Socratic method for discussions, which are held by telephone with tutors (what teachers or professors are usually called when using this method of inquiry and discussion). Check out my Amazon profile for some details.

One mans opinion of what it was like to be part of the nobility and live in Imperial Rome under the Claudio-Julian regime. Whether the intrigues and conspiracies, that Tacitus writes about, really did occur is now difficult to verify. However, his writings are an insight to the thinking of the Roman ruling elite and a valuable insight into their values, lifestyle and the events that shaped their world.
