I can't comment on the physical self-defense / fighting stuff, 'cause I've never done, couldn't do, any of that. But, turning 70 and knowing that old people can be targets, I wanted to learn how to better recognize, avoid, run from, and (at last resort) de-escalate bad situations involving people prone to settling things physically, or using violence to get what they want. The insights and tips in this book on these points are remarkable, fascinating really. And they work. I recently found myself cornered by a physically-imposing fellow yelling at me because he did not like the way I was acting in a particular dispute with a third-party. I followed this book's de-escalation script to the letter, and the threat melted away, we ended up smiling and shaking hands. This book is worth reading, even if you skip all the martial arts stuff, as I did. Especially if your work or travel takes you to unfamiliar places, places outside your comfort bubble.
I learned a thing or two reading this book, particularly about different types of social violence and how violent encounters usually start in the first place. This book inspires plenty of self-analysis regarding how one might react when faced with the threat of violence. It also offers useful tips on noticing and avoiding violent encounters, as well as taking action when necessary, particularly from a legal standpoint. "Facing Violence" is certainly worth reading if you’re interested in understanding the psychological perspective behind violence, how to avoid violence, and the mindset you’ll need to counter violence if necessary.
This is the book I have been looking for!Everyone (including me) comes into self-defense from the entry point of “What tools do I need and what techniques do I need to know in order to be able to use them to defend myself?â€; martial arts, knives, guns??This is natural, but eventually, one realizes (unfortunately, too often from harsh experience) that the single biggest problem to be overcome in self-defense (regardless of tools and techniques) is the plain fact that the advantage in a physical combat situation usually belongs to the person with the initiative. And the one who pretty much always has the initiative is the AGGRESSOR, NOT the defender. This is a very big problem. How does one stay equal with (or preferably ahead of) the actions of the attacker? How does the defender avoid falling into the fatal trap of being a REACTIVE element in a physical combat situation?Rory Miller points out that reacting to an attack means you are already well behind the response curve. It means that the odds are, you are going to get hurt; badly. What’s the answer?Rory Miller addresses this problem head on. Rory supplies some very, very interesting insights regarding exactly what is going on if you are approached by a violent criminal(s). He dissects the anatomy of an assault in detail at the psychological level. He tells you precisely how to interact with a dangerous person, how to LOOK at them (or NOT) and why, how to talk and why certain situations are more dangerous than others (perhaps MUCH more dangerous). There was an interesting case here in Philadelphia a short while ago where a father was car jacked with his infant daughter in the back seat. The victim complied with the two thugs IMMEDIATELY…..and they killed him anyway. After these kinds of crimes, people wonder WHY? There is a conventional wisdom out there that if a victim only does what the criminal demands, then everything will be okay.Rory’s book explains exactly why that supposition can often be fatally WRONG.For anyone interested in this subject there is another publication available online by the Department of Justice, “Violent Encountersâ€, 2006. This is the latest FBI study on how and why police officers get killed in the line of duty.Essentially, the FBI study confirms a lot of what Rory Miller talks about, but Miller’s book, “Facing Violence†goes much further and into even more detail, particularly from the standpoint of practical self-defense responses. This book is a must read for everyone interested in this subject!
I found this book at a time when I was facing a situation in my own life where my physical and mental safety was at stake, but open violence was not appropriate. Facing Violence helped me think things through and really face up to the unpleasant realities instead of running away. It helped me to think strategically, and to work within my own capacity to solve my own problem. Which I did… it took over 3 years but it's OK now, and nobody got hurt. It's a difficult and disturbing read, very clear and direct. Rory Miller breaks down the psychology of violent and predatory people in a way that is honest and candid, rather than sensationalistic. He also discusses legal consequences of self-defense, which most martial arts schools don't do, and fantasy movies don't do it, either.
This book tells you a few things about how to hit people, but that's not the point. Most of the book is a look at the psychology of violence, including specific types of fight and why they happen, emotionally. If you're a young adult male and some guy in a bar says "you lookin' at me, punk?", there's a very specific and instinctive situation happening, and Miller talks about how it can go down and how to get out of it. His emphasis is not on how to be a hero but on how to stay alive and, if you do end up hitting or killing someone, out of jail.I've played a lot of games over the years -- computer, console, tabletop -- where I've had thousands of imaginary fights. Yet basically no game I've ever seen has ever gotten into the thoughts and emotions that go into a real brawl, and I feel more enlightened for being exposed to this side of things.Grab this and read it alongside Dave Grossman's "On Killing", which talks about violence in the context of war.
