Just received the book a couple of hours ago and have read several chapters. It is NOT a cookbook-style tutorial written for readers who have limited experience with Stata or other similar software platforms. As far as I have read, materials are not well organized and beginners will be confused for sure: some details and "if you" scenarios are introduced too early and readers might be distracted. Not reader-friendly and steps of software operation are deeply buried in lengthy narratives. So be patient when reading. For software users, as far as I recall, the cookbook-style has been mainstream since the 1990s. But this book seems an exception. It is OK for readers who have already had some work experience with Stata. But for beginners, avoid it.
Explained the basic functions of Stata pretty well. I think having another chapter on the end that explained some more of the advance features of Stata and shortcuts and other neat tricks would be helpful instead of the current last chapter which is just a confusing mess of trying to get people to look up random things that aren't otherwise covered in the book.
My mentor recommended this book to me because my department recently switched the stats package we all use in our classes. This is a great way to learn the software -and- data analysis at the same time. This books spells things out in terms that non-statisticians can grasp. Totally worth the money!
Great little book
Got delivered really quickly. I DO wish it had a few more examples and really went into some more complex problems using STATA, but this is a really solid introduction to using STATA for data analysis.
Pretty good.
