This is a great book that I identify with 100%. I was diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder when I was in high school, and while at various times in my life this condition does appear to emerge, my normal day to life since a child has been consistent with that of one with HFA. My youngest son has a Autism, and he presents as the textbook case that does not get missed by anyone. However, I was born in the early 70s and am a female, so I feel that is why I was not diagnosed. My three other children also have neurodiverse traits. The oldest two adult children were ADHD and ADD. Their teachers begged me to get them tested for Aspberger’s, but I feared more stigma since the ADHD/ADD meds adversely affected my oldest son. And there was a stigma attached to the ADHD already. In addition, because the drugs I took for schizoaffective disorder in high school made me worse, I had run away from the pain and acknowledgement of my own diagnosis —and as a result have not been on meds for 26 years. I was rebelling against labels, but now I deeply regret not getting my oldest kids help. They now are wondering if they, too, might be on the Autism spectrum. My third child has sensory issues that are as challenging as my own and my son’s who has a diagnosis of autism. I am just keeping an eye on her for now. My point is this lack of diagnosis with me has created many problems for not only me— but my kids because I had no idea. I struggle the most with obsessive interests, crippling anxiety and social fears — and I was a professor for years! The symptoms of Autism seem to be what I go through on a daily basis, so knowing whether or not to get diagnosed is something that I wanted to know about. Thank you for writing this book. It has also helped me to realize I need to accept and research the schizoaffective diagnosis— and I have come to the conclusion that I might have both. Thanks again for helping me in my own journey.

I've been looking for a book like this that would answer some of my questions and point me in the right direction to find more. Not only have I found a book written by someone who's been in the trenches herself -- and who has a fascinating story of her own to share -- I've begun to look harder at my own suspicions that our oldest child's autism didn't come from thin air or simply because of the link between hypothyroid mothers and autistic children (or any other possible explanation).I've wondered for some time whether I might be on the spectrum, too, though I'd dismissed that possibility for years, because I'd learned to make eye-contact and can usually tolerate social situations for brief periods of time. I'm now seeing other traits -- things I'd never really associated with autism but that have been with me my whole life -- in a different light. I've taken an online quiz -- linked to in this book -- and received the following result (though I won't be more specific as to my score): "You are most likely neurodiverse (Aspie)."So, on goes my quest to find out if this will lead to an official diagnosis. I have mixed feelings, but one of them is relief. And I thank this author for helping me start the process.

I was impressed with what the author presented in this book. She was someone who had to go through the question of whether she was on the spectrum or not and where to go from there. I found her antecdotes interesting, her suggestions enlightening, and the entire book a fantastic read. The psychiatric society pegged ASD wrong in the first place with symptoms that were male in origin and so woman have been misdiagnosed for decades. This is a great first book for someone who is on the path to seeing if they are on the Spectrum or not.

This is a good honest account of the rigorous diagnostic journey needed for an autism diagnosis, especially for a more verbal person. I appreciated their honesty and open minded take on their journey, honoring the fact that many can't afford or don't or won't have access to the needed resources to undergo such an assessment. Yet their self assessment is really just as valid: who are we to tell anyone else what their experience is? Enlightening.

I enjoyed this book. Do I fit this picture? No? Yes? I'm too old, right? It is well-written and easy to read. The voice is very much a friend with some ideas and options; the writer seems compassionate, someone who has walked down this road and asked these questions. In fact, I think that's the point. She has and she's offering to save you some time instead of bumbling through. She's the guide who hands out the map of the museum so you don't end up in Greek when you're looking for Modern. I'm glad I bought it. It provided me all kinds of webpages and shortcuts it would have taken months to find on my own. If time is money, it's definitely worth your time.

Worth the price for the summary of the DSM-5 criteria alone. I couldn't understand it at all until I read through her lists of examples. I'm finding the description of her diagnosis journey helpful, too.A negative review mentioned that the info could be "scrounged up for free" on the internet. This may be true, but why scrounge when I have a well-organized and inexpensive book option?

Inspirational, informative, spot on. I appreciate the stuff discovery perspective of this book, as opposed to being just a general book about ASD. I highlighted every line that I relate to personally and was surprised by the sheer volume of things Kim was able to put to words on what I felt to be on my behalf. I recommend this book for anyone searching for answers whether for themselves or to better understand others. The book mostly focuses on getting a diagnosis, but is helpful in many other ways.

The Party Is Over: How Republicans Went Crazy, Democrats Became Useless, and the Middle Class Got Shafted, by Mike Lofgren

Review

“Lofgren’s ideas are trenchant and far-reaching. . . . With the feel of a long-repressed confession and the authority of an insider’s testimony, like the anti-war views of a decorated infantry officer . . . he writes about how the Republican party took advantage of a profoundly ignorant electorate, an easily conned and distracted media, and a cowed Democratic Party to press the ideological struggle in spite of the deep unpopularity of many of its positions.”—George Packer, The New Yorker“A fast-moving, hard-hitting, dryly witty book-length account of the radicalization of the Republican party, the failures of Democratic rivals and the appalling consequences for the country at large. Like the essay that inspired it, The Party Is Over is forceful, convincing and seductive.”—The Washington Post“Expect demand for this inside view of Washington, D.C., by a staffer who spent a quarter-century on Capitol Hill before publishing a screed on “America’s broken political system” at truthout.org. Lofgren criticizes Democrats . . . but his long service to GOP office-holders inevitably makes his critique of that party more detailed and fascinating. . . . A pungent, penetrating insider polemic.”—Mary Carroll, Booklist (starred review)“A scrupulously bipartisan diagnosis of the sick state of American politics and governance . . . Lofgren devotes close attention to budget issues rarely accorded so much detail in garden-variety op-ed warfare. Sustaining his original thesis well beyond Internet-browsing attention span, Lofgren has crafted an angry but clear-sighted argument that may not sit well at family reunions or dinner parties, but deserves attention.”—Publishers Weekly“A well-argued call for more sanity in American politics.”—Kirkus Reviews

Mike Lofgren presents a concise, informative and comprehensive analysis of current political problems, affecting our country. The issues presented are thought-provoking and everything in this book should be read, prior to Voting. The author portrays a clear picture of meaningful changes that need to take place, the importance of how these issues affected our nation, and Solutions that will work to change it for the Better. This feedback with careful thoughts and political opinions is information that's essential to professional assessment for the entry into solutions, the building blocks for America's future in a major concern about our country and the place it should be in history. "THE PARTY IS OVER" is powerfully moving and thought-provoking throughout. A book that's essential to read, prior to Voting. Highly Recommended!

In "The Party Is Over" Mike Lofgren presents a very similar message to Joseph Stiglitz's "The Price of Inequality" and Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein's "It's Even Worse than It Looks." The difference is that Lofgren's perspective is from working as a Republican analyst on House and Senate budget committees for 28 years. Throughout the book he tells of some of his interactions with unnamed elected officials, but primarily he focuses on specific people in government who forgot about what was for the good of the people in return for the power -- Republicans like Bush, Cheney, Abramoff, Gingrich, Bachmann, the Koch Brothers and Democrats like Obama, Rubin and Geithner. (Hint - you don't want to be mentioned in this book.)I've made it a point to read books that were written by people who have written from different vantage points -- columnists, think tankers, bloggers, former officials, news people. It's interesting to see how those authors attempt to balance their criticism to attempt to attract both liberal/Democratic and conservative/Republican readers and to avoid the shut-down response where one side jumps onboard enthusiastically and the other pans it without actually reading it. None of those books were as outspoken and specific as Lofgren's. The first 10 chapters focus on aspects of the Republican strategy or how the Republican Party has gotten to the point where they are now -- its history, tactics, selective use of the Constitution, the words it uses to fire up its base, its tax strategy (it's really all about reducing taxes for the rich ... all the rest is purposely used to distract from that main strategy), its alliance with the religious right, its media complicity, its anti-liberal fixation, and its continued dishonesty -- and all this from a Republican staffer! This focus on one aspect at a time helps to compartmentalize their positions. Chapter 11 is not friendly to the Democrats, stating that they are just as much in corporate pockets as the Republicans are and that Obama has done little more than extending many of the policies and affronts to our personal rights that Bush put in place. The main problem he has with the Democrats is that they don't focus on anything. Perhaps if the Democrats do focus in this campaign on the middle class as Carville & Greenberg propose in "It's the Middle Class, Stupid!" this issue might be addressed. As was the case in Jeff Faux's "The Servant Economy" I got a sense of hopelessness when I got to that final chapter. If you believe the expression "it's always darkest before the dawn," the chapter starts with this quote--"As we embark on the second decade of the 21st century, the commanding heights of corporate America--the banks, the military-industrial complex, corporate interests benefiting from huge subsidies like Big Pharma and Big Oil--largely have the government they want. They have the tax structure they desire. Under Bush appointee Chris Cox, the SEC's regulatory function was wrecked. The military has been so outsourced that the Army can no longer feed itself, while a policy of permanent war assures a perpetual cash flow to contractors. Federal law guarantees pharmaceutical companies the kind of collusive and monopolistic profiteering that antitrust laws were intended to prevent. Corporate America has posted record profits even amid the most protracted period of joblessness in post-World War II history. It is corporate nirvana. Under these circumstances, who needs an activist government? Now that the commanding heights have achieved their objectives, a gridlocked government will work just fine, regardless of who is in charge."Pretty scary if this is even remotely the case. In that final chapter, though, Lofgren offers a glimmer of hope. If the money can be removed from politics, then a chain reaction of positive developments could take place. After all, Lofgren says, people put us into this unfair and unequal position and citizens if properly educated to the situation can fight our way out. Already there are positive developments like people cleaning up their debt, refusing to apply to colleges where the tuition keeps skyrocketing, and working their way out of mortgages with no help from the government. It's pretty interesting, too, to see the early press reactions to Lofgren and how he emerged from a long, low-profile career in government to express such loud and outspoken opinions about people he experienced up close and personally. Few have branded him as a whistleblower or a troublemaker, though one reporter wondered why he sat still for so long if this bothered him so much. This may be a preview of what we may see in the upcoming 2012 election. How are the Republican moderates who are increasing pushed out of their party going to react to the extremism of the current party? Will they have had enough and vote Democratic as the better of two evils? Will there be a candidate with the resolve to do what is right rather than doing what they are lobbied or outright bribed to do? These are the questions that Lofgren focuses on that can help us as voters to think through what must happen in a long-term effort to reclaim our government.

This is one of the best books written on the subject of our dysfunctional government.Mike Lofgren is a Republican that worked in Washington D.C. and he offers up plenty of constructive criticism and personal insight.I like his writing style which is witty. The author's "devil's dictionary of contemporary American political terms" is one example. My personal favorite terms were "prolife" and "Tea Party."He covers all the bases and both parties.Mr. Lofgren writes of the GOPs fierce loyalty to the American "plutocracy." He also exposes the truth behind GOP rhetoric and smoke screens. The author lists the three main tenets of the GOP- wealth worship, war worship, and the permanent culture war. He also offers excellent material on authoritarianism and stealthy plans of dominionists. This isn't a large or exhaustive book by page count, but I recommend it in the category of a "don't miss" book. It's well written and has possible solutions.

This book must be read by the widest spectrum of American intellectualism, be it the proverbial conservatives, liberals, ideologues, fanatics...etc. of different ages. This book has a lot to teach the interested and red blooded Americans, which most of us should be, about the hijacking through "terrorist" methods. Terrorist is mentioned here in line with today's fad of labeling any action we do not like as terrorist act. Please I implore my fellow Americans to be informed citizens of our aging and contaminated "democracy". It is important through this kind of objective academic debate by the educated be united to purge the parasitical forces that are, if we are not careful, taking us, our country, and our livelihood to the abyss. This is because the only loyalty is the financial bottom line or favorable actions to them, regardless of how many skeletons they crush.

This tongue-in-cheek diatribe exposes the obvious. The rich are gaming the system by spinning news and buying politicians. It's nothing new. It's tried and true. The author's sharp tongue and razor wit tears into both political parties because they're both for sale. As a reader, I would alternatively laugh and cry at his observations. As a member of the Middle class I was appalled. But every year half-a-dozen books are written with similar themes. What's needed is a rallying cry and plan of action beyond winning the next election. There are no elections to win, obviously, as both sides of the aisle are corrupt to the core. God help us.
