Enduring Courage: Ace Pilot Eddie Rickenbacker and the Dawn of the Age of Speed, by John F. Ross

Review

“Fast-paced...With just the right amount of technical detail, Mr. Ross evocatively captures the excitement of the racetrack, where the driver had to contend with 'gumbo'-thick clouds of dust and gravel thrown up by the wheels... Mr. Ross's book does an excellent job portraying how the reality of air combat differed from the romantic notions, advanced at the time, of a noble contest between modern knights in the sky.” ―Wall Street Journal“Ross is at his best when he writes about Rickenbacker grappling with risk and adversity...the book is a riveting account of the dawn of the age of speed.” ―Dallas Morning News“A brisk and informing read... [Ross'] engaging new book, surveying the risky realms of racing and air wars, reminds the reader how fast the world changes -- and how much remains the same... Rickenbacker's life provides ample grist for thrilling narrative (and gruesome detail). Yet serving the good purposes of history, Mr. Ross artfully strikes resonances between eras...Portraying the ultimate daredevil in an age of daredevilry, Mr. Ross wrings out as much excitement as the material holds in describing Rickenbacker's violent worlds.” ―Washington Times“[A] lively and engaging portrait of Rickenbacker...Ross has a real gift for sitting the reader beside "Fast Eddie" as he thunders down the straightaway of a 1913 racetrack or leans forward in the cockpit of a Nieuport 28 climbing toward a flight of Fokkers...an admiring biography...Enduing Courage offers a compelling portrait of an American hero” ―Tom Crouch, Washington Independent Review Of Books“The dawn of the 20th century saw the advent of two world-changing technologies: automobiles and airplanes. With these came new breeds of risk takers and heroes--the racecar driver and the fighter pilot. Eddie Rickenbacker was both... Rickenbacker clearly had the "right stuff" for this brave new world. But what was the right stuff circa 1918? Biographer John F. Ross grapples with this and other questions in his new book... Many books have been written about Rickenbacker... Ross writes about many of the exploits described in those works, but he also mines primary sources, including thousands of pages of transcribed interviews with Rickenbacker, to get beneath what he calls "the veneer of untouchable hero.” ―NationalGeographic.com“In 1941, he suffered serious injuries and narrowly escaped death in a devastating aircraft crash near Atlanta. ... Following his recovery, Rickenbacker was selected by Secretary of War Henry Stimson to transport and personally deliver a reprimand to General Douglas MacArthur, then supreme commander of the Southwest Pacific Area, headquartered in New Guinea.... The B-17D Flying Fortress ferrying Rickenbacker got lost in the Pacific and was forced to ditch at sea. Together with the rest of the crew, Rickenbacker spent 24 harrowing days adrift on a life raft without food or water. The story of his survival and rescue is the most gripping part of Enduring Courage. Nowadays, of course, ... we don't have national heroes remotely like Eddie Rickenbacker.” ―The Weekly Standard“Energetic... Exciting... Ross sweeps readers along in Rickenbacker's thrilling tale.” ―Kirkus“Entertaining... Ross peppers the text with quotes that place readers right alongside the ace through nearly every moment of his life. Obviously this is exciting material to work with-after all, Rickenbacker was a man who drove in the first Indy 500 and dueled with the Red Baron's flying circus-but Ross is never fawning in this thoroughly enjoyable and downright rollicking read.” ―Booklist, starred review“Ross has a knack for exciting, visual narrative, and the life-defining moments of race and dogfight... A highly entertaining portrait, which reveres its subject as a hero defined by his high-speed feats.” ―Publishers Weekly“A lively and engaging portrait of Rickenbacker....a compelling portrait of an American hero.” ―Washington Independent Review of Books“[Eddie Rickenbacker's] life has been recounted in his own autobiographies and by many other authors, yet arguably none get the telling more right than John F. Ross in his exhaustively researched and exquisitely written biography, Enduring Courage.” ―Air & Space Magazine“John Ross is that rare soul who writes narrative history with the verve and timing of an accomplished novelist. Enduring Courage--a heroic portrait of the aviator ace Eddie Rickenbacker of Ohio--is a bona fide page turner. The Indianapolis race car scenes and World War I dogfights ripple with excitement. I couldn't put it down.” ―Douglas Brinkley, bestselling author, Professor of History at Rice University, and historian for CBS News“Daring, beautiful, and masterfully told, Enduring Courage puts you shoulder-to-shoulder with one of the great American spirits of all-time, Eddie Rickenbacker, who does in each chapter what the rest of us dream to do with our lives.” ―Robert Kurson, New York Times bestselling author of Shadow Divers“Whether it's the Indianapolis 500, a World War I dogfight, or a struggle for survival on a life raft in the Pacific, John Ross puts you there in the midst of the turbulent, often unbelievable life of Eddie Rickenbacker--the irascible, death-defying hero who helped set the dizzying pace of our modern, machine-driven age. As Ross says in the Introduction to Enduring Courage, 'Hold onto your seats.” ―Nathaniel Philbrick, New York Times bestselling author of In the Heart of the Sea and Bunker Hill“To say Enduring Courage is inspiring is totally inadequate praise. It is also gripping, electrifying, insightful--and full of new information about a legendary American hero. I have seldom been so glad to read a book.” ―Thomas Fleming, New York Times bestselling author of Conquerors of the Sky“Before Charles Lindbergh, before Chuck Yeager, before Neil Armstrong, there was Eddie Rickenbacker, American aviation's first mega-celebrity. In Enduring Courage, John F. Ross gives readers a brilliant and compelling biography of a man who led a remarkable life, illuminating as well a more innocent and hopeful period in American history, when the common man could make for himself a very uncommon future. This is an unforgettable treasure of a book.” ―Dr. Richard P. Hallion, former U.S. Air Force Historian and author“Richly detailed and dramatically told, Enduring Courage helps us perfectly understand how Eddie Rickenbacker became one of our greatest--if not THE greatest--aviation heroes of all time. Ross's meticulous research skillfully guides this real-life tale to a magnificent, completely satisfying landing.” ―Christina Olds, bestselling author of Fighter Pilot

I was born during World War 11 and admit to knowing little about the second World War and our brave fighter pilots. Of course, I had heard of the legendary Eddie Rickenbacker. I knew he was the squad leader of the legendary 94th Aero Squadron in World War 1, but that was about it.This book really brought the early 1900s into focus as it weaves a fascinating tale of Eddie Rickenbacker's life. He truly was an amazing person. This huge 361 page volume comes to life because the author of "Enduring Courage" makes this story full of excitement forcing you to keep turning the pages. This book follows the early history and final days of a true American patriot and hero. This excellent book is organized into four sections (or books). The first book (Racing) covers chapters one through five and deals with the early days of Eddie and his father and mother who were German immigrants beginning a new life in the United States. Life was very hard at that time. When Eddie's father died the young man had to take over the leadership of his family. Fortunately, Eddie's mother was a very strong person. This section also tells of Eddie Rickenbacker's first introduction to cars and racing. This is where he first became well-known for his courage on the race track. The second book (section-Flying) focuses on the first flying experience of young Eddy and his first introduction to learning how to fly the early death traps they called planes. He became an expert pilot. The third book (section-Fighting) deals with World War 1 and America's entry into that war with the British and the French fighting Germany. Eddie and a few other expert pilots became known as "Ace Pilots" in his 94th Aero squadron. The last section (Immortality) deals with the incredible courage and durability of Eddie Rickenbacker. Not only had he survived car crashes in his racing days, and his close calls flying the "death traps" , but he also survived a plane crash in the ocean. When all hope seemed to be lost after many days at sea in a small life boat Eddie again showed his leadership and courage by taking charge until they were rescued. To be honest, this short review cannot do justice to this wonderful and inspiring book. I now know more about the legendary and courageous Eddie Rickenbacker than most people. This book in my opinion is a must read for anyone who desires to see what true enduring courage looks like in a person. He was an authentic American hero we should all remember.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Predator Hunter: A warrior's memoir)

Man, what a life this guy had. He had more than nine lives for sure and you will understand why when you finish reading this book.I purchased this book because I wanted to learn about America's first Ace of Aces and what made him so good. Just about every biography starts off with the mandatory beginning of explaining the persons childhood which I always find a little boring and this book is no exception. But once you get through that and into how he started his race car days there is not a dull moment in the book or in his amazing life. I especially ordered this book so that I could learn more about his crash in the pacific during WWII and how he set the survival at sea record for a little while until another now famous Louis Zamperini surpassed it just a little while later in the war.The number one thing that I learned from this book was that Rickenbacker was not just a wild crazy former race car driver but also a natural born leader. My favorite high-light from the book was:Throughout history the best-prepared fighters in all of combat’s endlessly changing forms have faltered, stumbled, and failed without strong leadershipI highly recommend this book.

John F Ross, former editor of AMERICAN HERITAGE and SMITHSONIAN MAGAZINE has been an adventure/travel journalist and author for much of his adult life, writing more than 200 articles and at least six well-received books, including the award-winning WAR ON THE RUN: THE EPIC STORY OF ROBERT ROGERS AND THE CONQUEST OF AMERICA'S FIRST FRONTIER. His latest work deals with the full, eventful life of Eddie Rickenbacker, nee Rickenbacher, who was born in Columbus,Ohio to German-speaking Swiss immigrants at a key turning point in technological history.Near the end of this book (p. 319),Ross notes that "To his dying day in late July 1973, the then-octogenarian medal-of-honor-winning (1930) 'Ace of aces'[responsible for 26 verified 'kills'in WWI] insisted he was no hero, his extraordinary feats simply the results of the American way of life."Whether hero or not, it was [Eddie's]courage in extremity that served as a model for successive generations of explorers, adventurers, and warriors, from Charles Lindbergh and Jimmy Doolittle to Chuck Yeager and John Glenn, and an ever vaster host of risk takers, entrepreneurs and executives." Enduring numerous near-death experiences from his unhappy childhood to his cutting-edge flamboyance as a pioneer on the originally earthen, often-mud-sated automobile racetracks, and in those flimsy biplanes during WWI, Eddie (p. 320) "was many things -- daredevil, tinkerer [he was a self-taught master mechanic at a time when few knew anything about these revolutionary new machines], cool risk manager, improviser, showman, tactician, and [above all] a leader -- but always it was his enduring courage that shone like a beacon for the better part of a century, showing America what it could be and challenging it to get there."Victor L MoteProfessor emeritus of geography,Russian studies, and political science atThe University of Houston (1971-2011)Author of 150 scholarly publications, including:SIBERIA WORLDS APART (Boulder, CO: Westview/Perseus, 1998), 256 pp.;AN INDUSTRIAL ATLAS OF THE SOVIET SUCCESSOR STATES (Houston, TX: Industrial Information Resources, Inc., 1994), 300 pp.; andcoauthored with Theodore Shabad, GATEWAY TO SIBERIAN RESOURCES(New York: Wiley, 1977), 198 pp.

After reading just a few pages, it soon becomes obvious why it won awards. However, reading levels and vocabulary have fallen since 1961 when it was published so that most middle school students today will not understand and appreciate the story very well. It's the perfect book to read in English class at the same time students are studying the Roman Empire in History class. There is much useful vocabulary to prepare students for college, as well as many literary devices to discuss, and character development as well. It's a good choice for high school for Christian schools, home schools and students in secular schools writing about books of their choice. Books like this allow a teacher or parent to coordinate history and literature in a unit study.

Elizabeth George Spear is a phenomenal author and this story is wonderful. We read this book aloud to our four kids ages 12 to 5 And the older two children were completely and enraptured with the characters and story line. If you like this book I encourage you to read other books by this timeless author.

Summary:This is the story of Daniel, a young Jewish runaway who's taken up with a band of Zealots and bandits in hopes of driving the hated Romans out of his homeland. When the death of his grandmother forces him to go back home and care for his unhinged sister, he slowly begins to realize how little his carefully honed hatred has done for him, and how little use it is in achieving his ends. As his animosity brings disaster to his friends and destruction to his home, he turns in desperation to the prophet Jesus of Nazareth. My thoughts:Speare's book is well-written, accessible, and full of vitality. The theme of the book - the powerlessness of hatred - is as beautifully depicted here as anywhere, and is portrayed on an excellent level for younger readers (older ones will find that this book dovetails on a thematic level with C.S. Lewis's novel Till We Have Faces). Although this is certainly a Christian work, Jesus is not the main character, and the Christian themes arise organically from the characters themselves. Less satisfying are the statements and actions of Jesus himself. While Speare doesn't quite portray Jesus as an ordinary man, she apparently goes out of her way to avoid phrases like "Son of God" and it's a little unclear whether his miracles are actually miraculous or just the power of personality and suggestion. While this is disappointing and potentially troublesome to an adult reader, it's very unlikely that a reader at the younger end of the spectrum would even notice the inconsistencies. Those passages could even serve as excellent discussion starters.

One of the better fictionalized New Testament stories I've read. In a genre where sometimes the bar isn't set too high, in this book, the characters were well-drawn and interesting. The 1st century setting felt real. The author achieves a real transformation for the main character, Daniel, and it is well-dramatized and affecting. Apparently, this is what would be deemed YA (young adult) category, but I'm an adult and I enjoyed it.

Upon his grandmother’s death, teenaged Daniel returns to the town where he grew up to take care of his demon-possessed sister and take over the blacksmith shop of a friend, Simon, who has become one of Jesus’s disciples. Hoping Jesus is the one to deliver them from the tyranny of the Romans, Daniel and his friends form a group with the bronze bow (from 2 Samuel) as their symbol. The Bronze Bow by Elizabeth George Speare is a wonderful story of what anger and hate can do to us. The setting of first century Galilee and the peripheral character of Jesus Christ works well. I recommend this book to anyone about middle school age and up.

My daughter's Sunday School teacher gave this book to her class as a Christmas present last year, and I recently read it. It was so good that I purchased it for a friend who also enjoys historical Christian fiction. It's very well written, and I learned a lot about the culture of Jesus' day. I think it will give anyone a greater appreciation of the ministry of Jesus, the struggles that the Jewish community experienced under the control of the Romans, and a visualization of the region of Galilee where Jesus spent most of his life an ministry.

Read this myself in middle school and as an adult I still remember how much this impacted me in my youth. Through the point of view of a young boy during the time of Jesus, it was interesting to see how he was influenced even though his life was totally separate and he was going through hard times on top of finding his place in the world. Lots of great core value stuff in here. Got this for my nephew for Christmas but haven't heard yet how he liked it.

The bronze bow is one of those books you hope will go on forever. The message and plot were beautifully constructed with amazing characters easy to get invested in. The setting in Israel during the life of Jesus is great too as the struggle between zealots and legions rage on leaving many suspenseful moments. I recommend the book to anyone around the age of 12-16
