This is a book about regeneration - about what it means to be "born again." What I appreciated most about this book is its timing. We live in an era when the term "born again" is more often used as a term of derision than a description of God's supernatural work in a human heart. We've all heard it before: Oh, him! He's one of those, ugh, "born agains!" We forget that Jesus coined the term himself - and not George W. Bush. In this book, Piper allows Scripture to define the term, purging it of its 21st century baggage. Needless to say, the content of the book is great, and I wholeheartedly agree with John Piper's exegesis.My main criticism of the book deals with its execution. I found there were a few redundant places, and some other places where I wish he'd say more. But, overall, I recommend it. Especially to people who are curious to know what the Bible has to say about salvation.

The phrase born again is widely misused and misunderstood. In his book Finally Alive, John Piper's goal is to explain the new birth clearly and from the Bible, and he does just that.Dr. Piper gives a complete gospel presentation in 190 pages. His book is divided into sections that answer five questions: What is the new birth, why must we be born again, how does the new birth come about, what are the effects of the new birth, and how can we help others be born again?All are born dead in sin. In order to have eternal life, people must be born again. But how can one who is dead have life? Only by the regenerating power of God. Piper shows that this regeneration, or life, causes faith and belief. Though they appear at the same time and are inseparable, the new life is the cause of the faith, just as fire is the cause of heat. "Spiritual life and faith in Jesus come into being together. The new life makes the faith possible, and since spiritual life always awakens faith and expresses itself in faith, there is no life without faith in Jesus."Belief and faith are not the only fruits of a new birth; Dr. Piper shows that obedience and love also necessarily follow. "Our love for God obeys him freely and joyfully because in the new birth the spell of the world is broken and it loses its power....God himself is at work in the new birth so powerfully that we cannot keep on practicing sin."How does the new birth come about? By the hearing of the gospel. Not the mere hearing of sounds made by certain words, but the hearing of the historical, factual narrative of the Lord Jesus Christ and the truths concerning Him. Because God uses the spoken gospel as a means of regeneration, Christians ought to be encouraged to spread the gospel. And because the new birth results in true and unselfish love, Christians ought to be burdened to spread the gospel. "...What should we be doing to help unbelievers to be born again? The biblical answer is not obscure, and it's not complicated. He is a Biblical thinker and one of the most important Christian authors in the modern era. The sheer amount of pages he has produced in his career is staggering.Finally Alive is one of his newest, and it is a great read for new Christians. Why should we be born again? How are we born again? What is the Holy Spirit's role in salvation? These, and many more questions regarding the new birth, are answered in this short book. I thought the best part of the book was the last section on sharing the gospel, How Can We Help Others Be Born Again? His Ten Encouragements for Gospel-Telling at the end of this section are practical and were the highlight of Finally Alive.Piper's numerous works understandably have a lot of overlap, but I think Finally Alive is one that contains enough new material to make it worth your while, even if you have read much of what he has put out already. This book is geared towards those who would like to know more about being "born again." When people ask me which Piper books I recommend reading, I always recommend The Dangerous Duty of Delight first (this is the basically the cliff notes for Desiring God), and Don't Waste Your Life next. These books are short, readable, and life-changing. While Finally Alive may not be my first recommendation, it is certainly on the short list and would be a great one to pick up.

The new birth is so worthy of a complete book, examining it from all angles - when, why, how, to what end, and more. This is that book. Manifestly scriptural, you can literally watch Piper's exegetical process. A little too academic for those who just want the author to tell them what to think, and a bit repetitive for folks who don't want to savor as they read. After reading some of the other reviews I felt compelled to throw in my 2 cents. The various reviewers are all over the map from "LOVED IT ALL" to "IT SUCKED" - which is to be expected in any collection of short stories, and while there were some that I thought should have been omitted, there are others that more than make up for it. I am a fan of the horror genre, and gay which of course means I'm the core audience for this book and probably a little biased - that said, I truly enjoyed most of the stories in this collection... Notably - Genus Loci, Bear Shirt, The Spark and Piercing Men. I also enjoyed The Goodbye, though it was far from Queer Fear and many would argue should not have been included, it was a nice "palatte cleanser" in the mix.

An extremely chilling, absorbing, and enjoyable read. Whether or not you're gay or straight, these short stories will give you some heavy-duty frights.

I'm just about 1/3 of the way through, and so far it's okay. Several of the stories are a little too much of a big ball of art for my taste (I like my horror in your face; don't really care for thought-provoking metaphor or mind-expanding symbolism, but it's still pretty good. I was looking for horror fiction (my favorite) with gay characters or some sort of gay focus; something that would speak to me. I'll review again once I'm finished, and I'll review the second book once I start. I would recommend it if horror is your thing, and you want to see some openly gay folks as main characters. It's not bad at all (so far).

I received the book very quickly and in great condition. I had purchased the Queer Fear 2 first so I was happy to find the 1st one at such a reasonable price. I am sure I will enjoy it just as much because it is filled with some of my favorite authors.

A collection of stories that range from bearable to wonderful. All have some connection to homosexuality, most because the main character is gay, but those that are effective would have been equally so with straight characters.My short synopsis and rating (* to ***** stars):The Nightguard (C. Mark Umland) - a prisoner in a hellish lockup deals with a sadistically strange guard. ****Piercing Men (Douglas Clegg) - outwardly normal and straight suburban men play S&M games that get out of control. ****The Siege (Michael Marano) - not sure what this was about. *Bear Shirt (Gemma Files) - modern day skinhead obsesses over bear powers **Little Holocausts (Brian Hodge) - a man collects souls ***The Sound of Weeping (Thomas S. Roche) - a morgue worker has a strange attraction to the corpse of a beautiful young man ****Hey Fairy (Edo Van Belkom) - a gay man is attacked by some thugs but manages to get the best of them. *****The Spark (William J. Mann) - deaths in a neighborhood seem connected with a strange boy. ****Spindleshanks (Caitlin R. Kiernan) - use of a ouija board at a party seems to work too well for one of the hosts. ****The Perpetual (David Quinn) - a screenwriter takes to his motorcycle after a spat with his lover and seems to meet characters he was writing about. **Genius Loci (Becky N. Southwell) - An old man recounts an encounter with a ghost at a boys camp many years before. *****Goodbye (Michael Thomas Ford) - a young boy collects butterflies as a way to remember -- and maybe communicate with -- his dead grandmother. *****Tabula Rasa (Robert Boyczuk) - a group of gay men at a snowbound cabin in the woods play a cruel game with unexpected consequences. *****You Can't Always Get What You Want (T.L. Bryers) - a young hustler sets his sights on a beautiful creature he thinks is a vampire. **The Bird Feeders (David Nickle) - A homeless young gay man survives being passed around amongst old, wealthy men until he meets a Hungarian restauranteur who takes him away for a weekend. *****No Silent Scream (Nancy Kilpatrick) - a man loses it after a string of events he feels confirms his view of humanity and its poor state. **Nestle's Revenge (Ron Oliver) - after moving from West Hollywood to a small desert town with his lover and his lover's dog, a man finds nothing to do until a series of events involving the dog spiral out of control. *****Second Shadow (Joseph O'Brien) - Following the death of his lover a man gives up all his possessions to find a legendary lost land. ****Of the ***** stories, I most enjoyed Nestle's Revenge, due to the writing (as well as the unexpected twists.)The Arsenal Pulp Press edition has an introduction by Michael Rowe and includes short bios on each author.

I will admit that there are a few stories that seem out of place or are outright vapid, but overall I enjoyed this collection, especially since it introduced me to new writers whom I've not read. One story is about lesbians, but the majority contain gay men. From eroticism to terror to magical realism, this collection runs the gamut of horror fiction, offering up a smorgasbord of dark delights.

One of the best horror anthologies I have ever come across. Really well-chosen, well-written stories. Starts off with a bang with NIGHTGUARD and keeps getting better. HEY, FAIRY! is a great story. Real imagination here, all through the book. Can't wait for the sequel!

What disappointed me the most about Queer Fear was that the editor seems to think that "gay" and "queer" should mean "gay male." All but one of these stories are about men, and most are of the carelessly-written sort that one expects to find in anthologies of "gay fiction." There's very little that's frightening (or even interesting) here, more a preoccupation with sex than writing good stories. However, Caitlin Kiernan's "Spindleshanks," the ONLY story in the book about lesbians, is, curiously, also the only story in Queer Fear that transcends the pulply, hackneyed tone of the anthology to deliver something of literary merit. I would have given the book one star, but Kiernan's lush prose and skillful characterization are worth a couple more.

One of the reasons I started reading self-help books was because of my extreme anxiety. I'd lived with it for years, and couldn't take it anymore. And while I will happily report that I have made great strides regarding said anxiety, due in part to all the aforementioned self-help books, combined with therapy, one of the things I still haven't "recovered" from is my anxiety surrounding my smartphone. I have had this phone-anxiety for as many years as I've had anxiety, but on all the worst ends of it, and yes, I still have it even now. Sometimes my phone anxiety gets so bad I leave it on airplane mode for days. And I've tried to explain it to my hubby for as many years as I've felt this way, but he has never understood.Nor really did I until I read this book, and now ALL of it makes perfect sense. First of all, I got it because I was convinced it would tell me I'm not addicted to my phone, and while that is mostly true, it became glaringly apparent that I still have nervous tics surrounding my phone. And second of all, I got it hoping it would shed some light on why so much of my intense anxiety surrounds my phone, but it did far more than that. "Shed some light" is an understatement, and I found the lengths that people go through to make phones addictive to be disturbing and shocking to put it mildly.For instance, did you know that apps are carefully designed to give you a rush of endorphins at the exact right moment, to keep you from closing out of them, carefully leading you on for hours at a time? Because I certainly didn't. I don't mean it's a side-effect of an app. I mean that they design them that way.And as for all the anxiety I've had surrounding my phone, I finally have my answers. I'm not crazy. It wasn't in my head that my phone made all my anxieties worse, specifically my frazzled emotions, and inability to feel calm. But if there was any one thing that shocked me the most while reading this book, it was the realization that even I, who still to this day puts my phone into airplane mode, has a mild smartphone addiction. Even I do. And if that is possible, considering how strong my aversion is sometimes to my phone, then what in the world are these phones doing to others?Nothing good, I'll tell you that much. This book was an incredible find for me, and I'd recommend it to literally everyone in the world who owns a smartphone.

This book gives a shift in perspective. It's an easy read about some really disturbing things going on. I really feel sickened at how I've allowed myself to be led on in so many ways, I dumped all my social media weeks ago and I feel so much happier, my garden is amazing, my pets are awesome and I call my family. This book really gets you thinking about what it means to be free and how to consider living your life in a less sheeplike manner.Funny though, that after purchasing the book I immediately got a message saying "you don't have to wait, read this book on your phone right now"

Don't be misled by the title, as I almost was. Instead of recommending a permanent split with ones's smartphone, the author encourages us to re-evaluate the current relationship we have with our phones and ask ourselves if this is truly how we want to be spending our time. Price provides a thorough explanation of how devices and apps are developed to intentionally create an endless loop of browsing and be addictive. She also explains how human brains work, why we get a little rush of dopamine when we check our phone and why that hooks us to reach for it again only moments later. What I appreciate most about the author's approach is that information and advice is given without judgement. Instead of telling us we "shouldn't" be on our phones, which truly isn't the case, she is equipping us with the tools necessary to make a decision about how and when we use our phones. This is an important book. All smartphone users should read it so they can make educated choices.Also worth noting is I reached out to the author for a post I'm writing about this book on my blog (While I Was Reading) and she was friendly and willing to answer questions.

Remarkable how much of an impact doing these exercises has had on the way I think about my phone and technology in general. My main takeaway has been that technology lets us "speed up", doing more faster. The problem is that leads to context switching and multi tasking, which can often be less effective and more draining that working in deliberate sequence.The changes I've made in my life is removing social media apps in place of using the mobile browser (e.g. m.facebook.com) which I've found to be substantially less addictive. My only issue was getting lost in my Facebook or Twitter feed and that never happens because the mobile browser is so clunky to use.Towards the end of the book, you spend 1 whole day without tech and it was surprisingly wonderful. It was a normal Saturday at home but I felt like I was in the middle of a glorious vacation because I felt so relaxed.

I was skeptical at first about this book. Prior to the book’s publication, I had made a concerted effort to cut down my phone use. Still there was room for improvement. I liked the first part which introduced the science behind phone addiction and the second part which helped you create some space between you and your phone.Very good tips and advice.

Excellent book - the first part explains why we can’t stay off our phones very cohesively. All I could think of was, this makes so much sense and I now know why I’m exhausted and feel like I can’t focus and basically have to dumb everything down.The second part effectively helps set boundaries for healthy phone use. It really worked for me, and now I’m enjoying all the things I used to.I wrote to Catherine to tell her how awesome her book is via the book’s website and she actually wrote back and mailed me some phone stickers to remind me of what I want to pay attention to.Highly recommend. Wonderful read! This was exactly what I have been looking for and I loved it. Coming of age or getting to know who you are. Seeing yourself through the eyes of other people. Falling in love. This is how a true YA novel should be done. I kept smiling and frowning through the whole book. Thouroughly enjoying every wird, every page. So refreshing, so right. Thank you! I've said this before but adult books really should take note on how to tell a story in the right pace, with enough depth to the characters lika book like this actually does. The romance is very subtle, but you can FEEL it so much. And then everythingelse besides the romance. I'm so content right now!

Although some aspects of Sarah Dessen's heroines are out of reach for most (think 2 parent families in good suburban neighborhoods; think "unattainably beautiful"), I really love that she included a sadder, uglier, and unfortunately far more universal theme of rape and what we go through in an attempt to move on from an event that changes our lives for the worse.

PROS1.) It's truthful, honest, witty, and well written2.) It's one of those books that makes you actually feel the anger, happiness, shock, etc of the characters, which is very rare in a book, and very hard to do.3.) Makes you want to just keep reading and finish it already because your dying to know what happens, but you also don't want it to end because you're enjoying the book/ reading it somuch, also very rare and hard to do. CONS1.) Sometimes in books (and this is just my opinion, and I am not trying to be rude or judgmental) you just get sick of hearing the same thing over and over again, and sometimes you need to have a little bit of a surprise here and there. (Again, just my opinion) (I felt that this book, even though there are many pros and cons, and I don' t think that with with either one can outweigh the other, given the fact that everyone has a different opinion,) was, in my opinion, was sort of predictable on some accounts.2.) This may be just because I have read better material, given the fact that I am constantly reading, but I think that this book could've been made better. Now, I am not saying this to offend the author or the readers, because I myself am a writer and I don't want to be rude, but I think that the book, if written a little differently, could be much better if there were some things added. I am not saying to change the original story line, which I think is very good, but to, let's say, spice it up a little bit. Obviously since the story has already been written it can't be changed, but I feel it could have been better this way.3.) Lastly, I think that this story sort of pales in comparison with Sarah Dessen's other books, such as, Along for the Ride, Dreamland, Keeping the Moon, etc. Don' t get me wrong, it's a good book, but in my opinion she has written far better books. Overall I think that Just Listen is a good book, but maybe for younger or less advanced readers.(Again, this is just me stating my opinion and I am not trying to be rude, and I have read very advanced material, so it may be normal for me to feel this way.) It has its pros and cons just like any other book, and everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and I'm just stating mine. But Annabel realises that she is the one that is threatening to fall apart.When something terrible happens, she becomes an outcast at school. She's the hot topic among everyone around her, and those she thought she could trust are the ones running the rumour mill.But when Annabel starts talking to Owen, a music-obsessed, completely honest outcast like herself, Annabel begins to see the light. Don't think or judge, just listen. And Owen slowly but surely helps Annabel confront her fears and face the light, holding her hand along the way.This is a very sweet, very light read. If you're looking for something to read that isn't part of a series and doesn't have any complicated plot or characters, this is the book to read. however I would recommend it to a younger age, maybe 13-14-15, as I did find that it was a little too young for me (19), but again, it was something I still enjoyed.

On first glance I didn't think I would enjoy this novel. It involves topics I did not think I would be interested in: rape, eating disorders, anger management. The male character is not the attractive, charming young man one would expect. It is very different from Dessen's other books--darker, and though not as deep or meaningful as The Truth About Forever, it deals with issues most people wish to ignore as too intense or unpleasant and I learned a lot from it. I found this novel a surprisingly enjoyable and rewarding read. I learned a lot that I had not previously realized about the world around me and saw things from Annabel's point of view. It did not have the typical ending I would have expected--I was pleasantly surprised on that count as well. I especially love the way Dessen incorporated characters from two previous novels (my two favorites, as it happens). This is overall a great read. Some mature content, ages 15+.

I like reading different perspectives about obtaining wealth and this book is in the same spirit as Napoleon Hill's, but with a twist. The author makes no qulams about his religious beliefs and how they relate to money. The giving aspects and philosophies of this book are up front and center, but if you read the subtext, and sometimes right in the text, the book outlines a philosophy of living that hasn't been around since the fifties. Women in the home, men who take care of their families by teaching them and treating them fairly when it comes to learning how to control their own desires for needless items and wasteful spending that destroys wealth. Sure giving is at the core of this book, but also a message of responsibility and lost things like discipline and hard work and supporting your fellow “man.” Concepts that have been frankly destoyed by criminal capitalism and reality shows that hold up disgusting venoumous vipers as victors with the spoils we should all want instead of the villains of humanity that they most certainly are. I'm so not religious, but this author's pratice of it just may save the future from financial and spiritual ruin. Great work. Lots of good advice in here.

I love how this book focuses on change from within- mindset, self-talk, attitude and beliefs. For me, that is where the crux of change lies- within.The language of the book is straightforward and simple, and you won't have to beat around the bush to understand anything that is said. I enjoyed how humor and wit is sprinkled generously throughout the book, and the author is so insightful that he has anticipated the reader's reaction in many places, and addressed it effectively. The depth of understanding brought form by Omar Redden is pretty evident, and his exploration of the different mindsets is spectacular. I could find myself identifying with some of them, and also creating a path to move to the next. The case studies and examples shared by Omar support the case of 'being rich' beautifully.What really stood out for me is the idea of 'rich' that the author propagates, and how it includes so much more than just money. It was intriguing for me to evaluate concepts of rich, enough, sufficiency and even giving. It is bound to make you think!

Be happy NOW - not after you make your first million.3) Budgeting is about BALANCE.I had to stop and think about my habits and practices when it comes to money. I'll admit, I have some work to do, but I can always come back to this book for little reminders. Definitely recommended!
