Many accounts contradict each other or, at least, can't agree on the timing and sequence of events. Cornwell addresses many of the key disconnects and lays out what he believed happened all while telling a story. When it's done you can begin to feel how the battle flowed, not in neat phases but as a series of often overlapping events played out over the battlefield. In this the storyteller comes to the fore because he's able to weave together a variety of multiple events, perspectives, and people in such a way that you see the whole and not the part. It's not just a story of the British or Prussian or French armies, or the common soldier, or the three great leaders. In the end it's a story about how that all came together. In this Cornwell was able to rely on the original work of historians - Cornwell's strength in this book is not original research, there's nothing new historically, but what makes his book worth reading is the way he painlessly tells the tale in a very understandable manner.If I had one complaint, and it's a relatively small one, it's that he switches between the past and present tenses in his writing, sometimes within the same paragraph. I think he periodically switched to the present tense to try to increase the immediacy of what he was describing, but, for me, it tended to interrupt the moment; rather than staying caught up in the story, it reminded me I was reading a book.If you're familiar with some of the post-war finger-pointing among the allies you'll understand, after reading the book, Cornwell's conclusion that, "The battle of Waterloo was an allied victory. That was how it was planned and that was how it turned out. Wellington would never have made his stand if he thought for one moment that the Prussians would not let him down. Blucher would never have marched if he thought Wellington would cut and run."This is one of those books that I still recommend even if you're familiar with Waterloo. Cornwell's ability to tell a story really pulls together the historical elements in a way that allows understanding.

As someone who does not know much of Wellington, Napoleon, or Europe in the 1800s, "Waterloo" was a complete introduction to me of one of the greatest battles of all time. And Bernard Cornwell's account is magnificent.This book was enjoyable to read. It flowed well from beginning to end. Descriptions of the battle were detailed, colorful, and gory (it is war, what do you expect?). Cornwell captures the readers imagination. He also includes many quotations and first person accounts--giving a true sense of what it was like to be there. Brilliant paintings and maps fill the pages giving the reader much to visualize the battle as it is laid out before him (this was a hard copy). I find it difficult to visualize battle movements when solely based on textual descriptions, so the detailed and vibrant maps vastly contributed to my reading experience.What I appreciate most of Cornwell may not even be his story telling prose--but how accessible his information is. The most clueless Waterloo amateur (like myself) will not be left in the dark long. Cornwell's writing will bring anyone up to speed on the basics of Napoleonic warfare: What is a column? What is a square? What is a line? And what are the advantages of each formation? Why would people march in massive columns in the open and willingly shoot each other? He describes what affect the musket, the cannon, and the horse had on 1800s tactics. He spends much paper discussing the leaders: Wellington, Napoleon, Blucher, Ney. Anyone can read this and very quickly understand the times, the tactics, and the battle itself.I learned much of Napoleon and his arrogance which I believe came back to bite him. He believed that he was near invincible, attacking two armies that together almost doubled his own strength. He delegated much power to his Marshalls (why?!) who time and time again broke clear rules of engagement. Wellington in contrast was very much involved in the battle--his calm and steady countenance exuded confidence. His troops took heart in brilliant displays of courage and (spoiler alert) withstood to win the day. The Prussian General Blucher's persistence after getting whipped earlier also contributed to the eventual defeat of The Emperor. There is much strength in unity.If I was picky I would wish that Cornwell would have summarized key events a little more. Instead of simply describing the facts and giving quick real time analysis, I would have appreciated Cornwell to have stepped back from the battle to elaborate on the significance of each moment more frequently. Part of me is left wondering--actually how important was the holding of Hougemont or how important was the charge of the Royal Scott Greys in the overall picture of the battle? Cornwell does well to say that understanding Waterloo is near impossible as war (and this battle in particular) is chaos. There are many contradictory accounts over what happened and where it happened and when it happened. Even so, I feel that he could have summarized the key events more.But that is a small thing in the big picture as all in all I found this book masterful. Before I read this I had no understanding of the people and events of Waterloo, and now I know more than most. That is why I read books! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning history and events that have shaped our world. Enjoy.

As a US History major I never studied the European wars in much detail. When doing work in Europe drove by the battlefield, but since I was late for a meeting just paused. A small area, sloping hills. Did not realize how much I missed until reading this book. Not only is it about the battle, but also how Napoleon returned from exile, the alliances in 1815. and the effects of this battle on the peace of Europe for many years.The explanations of how the various units operated finally gave me a good understanding of the way war was found in the early 1800's and carried forward in our War Between the States. Squares, lines, Calvary charges, lancers, and type of artillery have new meaning to me after reading the book. Although knowing the final outcome, Cornwell is able to keep the suspense of how it happened. Such a large number of men and horses in a small area, close fighting, hand to hand, and personal accounts of death and wounding, and of loss and victory provide a sober view of the wars of the era.

I lost my parents in 99, I was very close to my Mother, but I knew that if I mourned her the rest of my life she would not want that, while their are times I want my mom, I know I only have to look in my heart. I thank God daily for what I have, and the trails of my past are just that my past. I truly felt the peace and comfort I had known once before. Thank you for your amazing and heartfelt books.

I just went through a horrible breakup with a man I lived with for 5 years and thought we were getting married. My heart is broken. I read this book and I am Letting Go and listening to God. It was not right for me. Totally inspired. And I thank God for leading me to this book. I would recommend this book to ANYONE going through things they don't understand.

I have read many self help and spiritual books, so I was acquainted with the words of Reverend Martin. However, I also believe that God speaks through others to send me a message, and I needed the repeated reminder in Reverend Martin's book to LET IT GO. I also took great comfort in Reverend Martin's relationship with and faith in God. I got this book with kindle unlimited, but I intend to buy it to keep it in my kindle library. It is worth reading over and over again.

This is a straight-forward, simple, and short read. Reverend Martin shares several personal stories to tie in his points, and they help illustrate how trusting in God works for everyday people. He gives some practical suggestions, and his points are backed up with scripture. The only critique I have is that it could have had even more of an impact with more scripture references because I noticed a few points aligned with other scripture as well. It's nice for readers to know when suggestions align with the Word of God since doing His Word will always be in line with His will. That said, we are supposed to accept Gods Word with eagerness when it is preached, but be willing to search for the accuracy of the message ourselves (acts 17:11).

Great concept, great to bring people into mindfulness. I have recently been questioning things and good to see someone say its OK to meditate.

This is a book about regeneration - about what it means to be "born again." What I appreciated most about this book is its timing. We live in an era when the term "born again" is more often used as a term of derision than a description of God's supernatural work in a human heart. We've all heard it before: Oh, him! He's one of those, ugh, "born agains!" We forget that Jesus coined the term himself - and not George W. Bush. In this book, Piper allows Scripture to define the term, purging it of its 21st century baggage. Needless to say, the content of the book is great, and I wholeheartedly agree with John Piper's exegesis.My main criticism of the book deals with its execution. I found there were a few redundant places, and some other places where I wish he'd say more. But, overall, I recommend it. Especially to people who are curious to know what the Bible has to say about salvation.

The phrase born again is widely misused and misunderstood. In his book Finally Alive, John Piper's goal is to explain the new birth clearly and from the Bible, and he does just that.Dr. Piper gives a complete gospel presentation in 190 pages. His book is divided into sections that answer five questions: What is the new birth, why must we be born again, how does the new birth come about, what are the effects of the new birth, and how can we help others be born again?All are born dead in sin. In order to have eternal life, people must be born again. But how can one who is dead have life? Only by the regenerating power of God. Piper shows that this regeneration, or life, causes faith and belief. Though they appear at the same time and are inseparable, the new life is the cause of the faith, just as fire is the cause of heat. "Spiritual life and faith in Jesus come into being together. The new life makes the faith possible, and since spiritual life always awakens faith and expresses itself in faith, there is no life without faith in Jesus."Belief and faith are not the only fruits of a new birth; Dr. Piper shows that obedience and love also necessarily follow. "Our love for God obeys him freely and joyfully because in the new birth the spell of the world is broken and it loses its power....God himself is at work in the new birth so powerfully that we cannot keep on practicing sin."How does the new birth come about? By the hearing of the gospel. Not the mere hearing of sounds made by certain words, but the hearing of the historical, factual narrative of the Lord Jesus Christ and the truths concerning Him. Because God uses the spoken gospel as a means of regeneration, Christians ought to be encouraged to spread the gospel. And because the new birth results in true and unselfish love, Christians ought to be burdened to spread the gospel. "...What should we be doing to help unbelievers to be born again? He is a Biblical thinker and one of the most important Christian authors in the modern era. The sheer amount of pages he has produced in his career is staggering.Finally Alive is one of his newest, and it is a great read for new Christians. Why should we be born again? How are we born again? What is the Holy Spirit's role in salvation? These, and many more questions regarding the new birth, are answered in this short book. I thought the best part of the book was the last section on sharing the gospel, How Can We Help Others Be Born Again? His Ten Encouragements for Gospel-Telling at the end of this section are practical and were the highlight of Finally Alive.Piper's numerous works understandably have a lot of overlap, but I think Finally Alive is one that contains enough new material to make it worth your while, even if you have read much of what he has put out already. This book is geared towards those who would like to know more about being "born again." When people ask me which Piper books I recommend reading, I always recommend The Dangerous Duty of Delight first (this is the basically the cliff notes for Desiring God), and Don't Waste Your Life next. These books are short, readable, and life-changing. While Finally Alive may not be my first recommendation, it is certainly on the short list and would be a great one to pick up.

The new birth is so worthy of a complete book, examining it from all angles - when, why, how, to what end, and more. This is that book. Manifestly scriptural, you can literally watch Piper's exegetical process. A little too academic for those who just want the author to tell them what to think, and a bit repetitive for folks who don't want to savor as they read. But very devotional and beautiful for anyone who's willing to take an unhurried look at the amazing work of God in every genuine believer in Christ Jesus.

About the Author

In 2003, Michael Rowe became the first Arsenal Pulp Press author to win a Lambda Literary Award, for Queer Fear II, the sequel to his first critically-acclaimed queer horror anthology, Queer Fear. He is an award-winning independent journalist who has lived in Beirut, Havana, Geneva, and Paris. His work has appeared in the National Post, the Globe and Mail, the United Church Observer, and numerous other publications. He has been a finalist for both the Canadian National Magazine Award and the Associated Church Press Award in the United States. He is the author of several books, including Writing Below the Belt, a critically acclaimed study of censorship, pornography, and popular culture, and the essay collections Looking For Brothers and Other MenÂ’s Sons, which won the 2008 Randy Shilts Award for Nonfiction. After reading some of the other reviews I felt compelled to throw in my 2 cents. The various reviewers are all over the map from "LOVED IT ALL" to "IT SUCKED" - which is to be expected in any collection of short stories, and while there were some that I thought should have been omitted, there are others that more than make up for it. I am a fan of the horror genre, and gay which of course means I'm the core audience for this book and probably a little biased - that said, I truly enjoyed most of the stories in this collection... Notably - Genus Loci, Bear Shirt, The Spark and Piercing Men. I also enjoyed The Goodbye, though it was far from Queer Fear and many would argue should not have been included, it was a nice "palatte cleanser" in the mix.

An extremely chilling, absorbing, and enjoyable read. Whether or not you're gay or straight, these short stories will give you some heavy-duty frights.

I'm just about 1/3 of the way through, and so far it's okay. Several of the stories are a little too much of a big ball of art for my taste (I like my horror in your face; don't really care for thought-provoking metaphor or mind-expanding symbolism, but it's still pretty good. I was looking for horror fiction (my favorite) with gay characters or some sort of gay focus; something that would speak to me. I'll review again once I'm finished, and I'll review the second book once I start. I would recommend it if horror is your thing, and you want to see some openly gay folks as main characters. It's not bad at all (so far).

I received the book very quickly and in great condition. I had purchased the Queer Fear 2 first so I was happy to find the 1st one at such a reasonable price. I am sure I will enjoy it just as much because it is filled with some of my favorite authors.

A collection of stories that range from bearable to wonderful. All have some connection to homosexuality, most because the main character is gay, but those that are effective would have been equally so with straight characters.My short synopsis and rating (* to ***** stars):The Nightguard (C. Mark Umland) - a prisoner in a hellish lockup deals with a sadistically strange guard. ****Piercing Men (Douglas Clegg) - outwardly normal and straight suburban men play S&M games that get out of control. ****The Siege (Michael Marano) - not sure what this was about. *Bear Shirt (Gemma Files) - modern day skinhead obsesses over bear powers **Little Holocausts (Brian Hodge) - a man collects souls ***The Sound of Weeping (Thomas S. Roche) - a morgue worker has a strange attraction to the corpse of a beautiful young man ****Hey Fairy (Edo Van Belkom) - a gay man is attacked by some thugs but manages to get the best of them. *****The Spark (William J. Mann) - deaths in a neighborhood seem connected with a strange boy. ****Spindleshanks (Caitlin R. Kiernan) - use of a ouija board at a party seems to work too well for one of the hosts. ****The Perpetual (David Quinn) - a screenwriter takes to his motorcycle after a spat with his lover and seems to meet characters he was writing about. **Genius Loci (Becky N. Southwell) - An old man recounts an encounter with a ghost at a boys camp many years before. *****Goodbye (Michael Thomas Ford) - a young boy collects butterflies as a way to remember -- and maybe communicate with -- his dead grandmother. *****Tabula Rasa (Robert Boyczuk) - a group of gay men at a snowbound cabin in the woods play a cruel game with unexpected consequences. *****You Can't Always Get What You Want (T.L. Bryers) - a young hustler sets his sights on a beautiful creature he thinks is a vampire. **The Bird Feeders (David Nickle) - A homeless young gay man survives being passed around amongst old, wealthy men until he meets a Hungarian restauranteur who takes him away for a weekend. *****No Silent Scream (Nancy Kilpatrick) - a man loses it after a string of events he feels confirms his view of humanity and its poor state. **Nestle's Revenge (Ron Oliver) - after moving from West Hollywood to a small desert town with his lover and his lover's dog, a man finds nothing to do until a series of events involving the dog spiral out of control. *****Second Shadow (Joseph O'Brien) - Following the death of his lover a man gives up all his possessions to find a legendary lost land. ****Of the ***** stories, I most enjoyed Nestle's Revenge, due to the writing (as well as the unexpected twists.)The Arsenal Pulp Press edition has an introduction by Michael Rowe and includes short bios on each author.

As another reviewer noted, I've been waiting for this sort of collection for years. With authors new and others familiar, this book, edited by Rowe, is a marvelous addition to any horror fan's shelf, gay or straight. I will admit that there are a few stories that seem out of place or are outright vapid, but overall I enjoyed this collection, especially since it introduced me to new writers whom I've not read. One story is about lesbians, but the majority contain gay men. From eroticism to terror to magical realism, this collection runs the gamut of horror fiction, offering up a smorgasbord of dark delights.

One of the best horror anthologies I have ever come across. Really well-chosen, well-written stories. Starts off with a bang with NIGHTGUARD and keeps getting better. HEY, FAIRY! is a great story. Real imagination here, all through the book. Can't wait for the sequel!

What disappointed me the most about Queer Fear was that the editor seems to think that "gay" and "queer" should mean "gay male." All but one of these stories are about men, and most are of the carelessly-written sort that one expects to find in anthologies of "gay fiction." There's very little that's frightening (or even interesting) here, more a preoccupation with sex than writing good stories. However, Caitlin Kiernan's "Spindleshanks," the ONLY story in the book about lesbians, is, curiously, also the only story in Queer Fear that transcends the pulply, hackneyed tone of the anthology to deliver something of literary merit. I would have given the book one star, but Kiernan's lush prose and skillful characterization are worth a couple more.
