Being the daughter of Pierce Butler, the profligate planter scion whose financial incompetence necessitated the liquidation of his family fortunes and the largest slave sale in Georgia history, and of Fanny Kemble, an English actress and fiery abolitionist whose account of slavery in Georgia scandalized anti-slavery audiences in the American North and England, any contribution which Frances Butler Leigh might make to the historiography of slavery is sure to be controversial. And despite its slipshod fact-checking and occasional lapses into race-related farce and melodrama, Ten Years on a Georgia Plantation since the War is a fascinating and essential look into both the material and conceptional identity of the Georgia planter aristocracy after the War Between the States.Culled from letters and personal remembrances, Ten Years offers a very broad survey into what life was like for Frances from her arrival on Georgia's coast in 1866 to her departure in the mid-1870s. This summation consists primarily of broad generalizations, in which Frances offers insight into economic, political, or racial matters, punctuated with in-depth anecdotes. These little episodes are quite fascinating, and deal with subjects ranging from the state of Southern railroads after the War to the musical habits of local freedmen to the Republican political machines operating along the coast. There is a very great deal of valuable and essential information to be gleamed from these episodes, and the included appendix, which consists of letters from Frances' husband, the Rev. James W. Leigh, provide additional tantalizing details about daily life on a post-war rice plantation. But along with factual details of note, Frances also slips often into the pap of sentimentality. Many of her interactions with kind and doting freedmen seem just a bit too precious, while casual calumnies about the conduct of the freed population abound as well. One feels as though Frances intentionally threw in these little asides to engage the interest of audiences, who were eager for the kind of trivial and clearly fictionalized interactions found in Uncle Tom's Cabin. Thankfully these exchanges tend to be very obvious and can be readily sorted out from the more meaningful reminisces.I would recommend Ten Years on a Georgia Plantation since the War for any who is interested in daily life in the American South or white perceptions of freedmen in the South. There is an incredible amount of information available in this work, if one is willing to wade through the sensationalism.

What an interesting read. As a Southern Coastal resident having visited Darien & the St Simon's & Butler Islands, I found Mrs Leigh's account historically fascinating. There is little left of anything of that era (except for the great brick millhouse chimney that still stands on the property). The rice fields have long since been taken back by the marsh, but the dikes & canals can still be seen in many areas, indeed, all along the coast. To read her accounts of her travels to Savannah & descriptions of the beauty of the marshlands & Sea Islands make me love my home even more....It is also interesting to see that some things haven't changed, though.

Enjoyed this first hand account of life in the south during reconstruction. Her vivid storytelling made me feel like I was really there. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as well as her mother's, which was written prior. Both give an exceptional account of southern life for both blacks and whites before, during and after the civil war.

I have read the book by Fanny Kemble, the great English stage actress, the mother of Frances Butler Leigh, who was so horrifiedafter having married Pierce Butler and come to live on his rice plantation near Darien, Ga. and his cotton plantation on St. SimonsIsland, Ga., that she divorced him. She did, however, have two children by Butler. The daughter who is the author stayed withher father in Philadelphia in the house he had there during the war. Immediately after the war they went south to reclaim theplantations, rice and cotton, that were theirs that the Yankee Reconstruction Government had taken away from many coastal is-land planters. It is a fascinating story of trying to get their plantations up and running again. This daughter doesn't seem to beas horrified by slavery as her mother was but tells of the former slaves actually being glad to see their former master. It tells ofthe trials and tribulations of trying to make their plantations profitable again, and also what all they did to assist their former slaves now that they were free. I highly recommend it.

Author's 19th perspective carried me to area where once the planters ruled, and how the area was rocked by the War Between the States, and yet how little the lifestyle of the enslaved peoples was changed.

My wife and I were visiting Florida and Georgia and stopped at the Butler Plantation house on our drive, thus leading to our interest in this book. Fascinating to hear the description of the post civil war times from a former slave/plantation owner and her description of the changing times.

First off, I love wool applique (and sheep, like the author does) and I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. The general instructions and stitch glossary are gravely lacking and the fact that all the projects (even the larger ones) are made up of very small pieces of wool.Let me explain more...The instructions are for using fusible web (that's okay because that is my preferred method) however the patterns in the book are not reversed -- you have to do that yourself. WHAT?!! (Shame on the publisher.) Anyway, the instructions say to copy the pattern pieces, cut them out and then reverse them and draw them onto fusible web. To me that seems like a whole lot of extra work when it doesn't need to be. I'm not a newbie at wool applique or basic embroidery stitches but I found the stitch library to be very lacking and the simple pictures weren't very self explanatory. Based on the stitch glossary, you would blanket stitch all appliques down...have you ever tried to blanket stitch little pieces? It just doesn't work; instead you need to whip stitch those. The book doesn't even mention the whip stitch! There are 12 projects that are in seasonal categories: 2 for spring, 4 for summer, 3 for fall, and 3 for winter. The largest projects are table runners which are 12" x 52" (spring) and 14.5" x 44" (fall). The rest of the projects are done in pillows of which the largest is 25.5" x 15.5" (made up of a lot of small wool elements). There's one project that is 15.5" x 14.25" and one that's 9.25" x 12.75" and then the rest are all under 10". The smallest is 6" x 6". (I consider that more of a pincushion size.)The style is primitive country.Even though several of the projects in the book are identified as beginner level, I would not recommend this book for a beginner unless they use other more thorough resources that cover the various basic methods of preparing appliques and stitching them down. Other resources for embroidery stitches would also be necessary since this book doesn't cover them well.If I had do-overs, would I buy the book again? No, sorry.

Great book!!

I ordered this for my 13 year old granddaughter for Christmas, but having looked through it, I decided to give it to my 16 year old granddaughter instead. It seems like it is more appropriate for the 16 year old because of the more mature writing. I liked what I read in the book. It seems to be more hip and inspiring than some of the books I've seen written for young women of this age. I'm hoping my granddaughter will read it and take it to heart because it appears to have some very wholesome Christian advice for her.

I haven't finished the book yet, but I have started reading it and I think it's a really good eye opener. We always want to find ways to better out relationship with Jesus, but sometimes we don't know where to start. This book offers a good outlook on how to really have a relationship with God with steps to achieve that relationship.

I highly recommend this book. This is the 2nd devotion book I have bought by Elizabeth George. My teen girls and I love her devo's.

My 12 year old is reading this as a daily/weekly devotional. She's getting a lot out of it.

I bought this book for my little sister, as she was starting to take an interest in God's role in her life, and this book changed her life. it's such a great tool for any young woman seeking the heart of the Lord.

Bought this for my daughter (14 years old). She said this is the best book she's ever read. Not boring at all. Very helpful.

A book that all young women should read

It was for my daughter but she said she likes it.

The Operator: Firing the Shots that Killed Osama bin Laden and My Years as a SEAL Team Warrior, by Robert O'Neill

Review

"Harrowing . . . In frank and vivid detail and blunt and plain language, Mr. O'Neill describes some of the 400 counterterrorism operations and close quarter combat he experienced in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere through his career as a SEAL . . . An interesting and insightful book about some of the most historic moments in modern American military history." —Washington Times"A jaw-dropping, fast-paced account." —New York Post"Enlightening about military special forces, especially the SEAL component . . . A fast-paced account quite likely to engender strong reactions among readers concerned with the U.S. military's roles in foreign conflicts." —Kirkus Reviews"O'Neill absorbingly relates the 2011 attack on bin Laden's Pakistan compound . . . [Other] fascinating stories include his role in the successful 2009 mission to free Capt. Richard Phillips from Somali pirates, and those of too many fellow SEALs who were killed in battle. Fans of battlefield narratives, such as Michael Golembesky's Level Zero Heroes, will relish this gripping perspective on 21st-century warfare." —Library Journal“A riveting, unvarnished and wholly unforgettable portrait of America’s most storied commandos at war." —Joby Warrick, author of Black Flags: The Rise of ISIS, winner of the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction  “Intensely moving and awe-inspiring, The Operator captures as few other books have the essence of being a frogman: utterly unimaginable fatigue followed by intense exhilaration followed by a weary emptiness—and then back for more. As this book shows, SEALs regularly travel to an emotional place that few men will ever visit. O’Neill wrote himself into American history with the three shots he fired into Osama bin Laden, but if you think that operation was intense wait till you read about the ones that preceded it. There is a saying, ‘Great battles are only given to great warriors.’ Rob was repeatedly given great battles, and he represented accordingly.” —Marcus Luttrell, New York Times bestselling coauthor of Lone Survivor and Service“Impossible to put down . . . What O’Neill has written is unique, surprising, a kind of counternarrative, and certainly the other half of the story of one of the world’s most famous military operations . . . In the larger sense, this book is about how to be alive—how to be human while in the very same moment dealing with death, destruction, combat.” —Doug Stanton, New York Times bestselling author of In Harm’s Way and Horse Soldiers

"The Operator: Firing the Shots that killed Osama Bin Laden" by Robert O'Neill, (publ. Apr. 25, 2017); 358 pp, hardback. (Amazingly, as I write this review while holding the book in hand, one can read almost the entire book as provided for in Amazon Books!)This book regards the experiences of the author in serving as a U.S. Navy SEAL member on some 400+ "missions", with his account of being the person who actually shot and killed Osama Bin Laden -- the Islamist who coordinated the hijacked airplane, suicidal Islamikazi attacks on 9/11/2001 that destroyed several skyscrapers in NYC and damaged the Pentagon. The author recounts growing up in Montana and the road that led to his joining the U.S. Navy to become a SEAL. He recounts his SEAL training -- a trying, exhausting experience that one has read in many other SEAL-training books written by other SEAL-school graduates. Following SEAL training, he discusses other combat-oriented training that he undertook during his 16 years as a SEAL.What, of course, is of primary interest here is his account as to how his SEAL team trained for their mission to "neutralize" Osama Bin Laden at his secretive Abbottabad, Pakistan compound. I'm not going to recount the author's entire 25-page raid of rappelling from a helicopter into Osama's high-walled "fortress", but will quote the author as claiming that as he climbed up a stairwell to Osama's third floor: "Osama bin Laden stood near the entrance at the foot of the bed, taller and thinner than I'd expected, his beard shorter and hair whiter....In less than a second, I aimed above the woman's right shoulder [who was standing in front of Osama] and pulled the trigger twice. Bin Laden's head split open, and he dropped" (p. 310).  Well, there's more to the author's account as to how his team searched through the building for documents and computers for intelligence data, and their escape back to their Afghanistan base.About a year-and-a-half after shooting bin Laden, the author decided to retire -- but still about 3 years short of being able to retire from the military and qualify for a monthly pension. Towards the end of his SEAL career, he came under criticism from other SEALs that he was planning on quitting early in order to "cash in" on writing a book such as this.  The author was bothered by such criticism, and he pondered in his concluding paragraph: "I've had many moments when I've wondered if being the one who killed Osama bin Laden was the best thing that ever happened to me, or the worst. I'm still trying to figure that out" (p. 336).Even if the author hadn't been the SEAL who downed Osama, his recounting of his other combat experiences would still make this book an interesting read. I highly recommend it.

I read this book almost entirely straight through, finishing it in one day. Like Rob, I grew up in small-town Montana and joined the military straight after high school, so I found his early chapters both very interesting but also very relatable. He manages to break down his journey through BUD/S in a way that's easy for us to understand and digest yet also remain awestruck at what those guys have to go through to earn their title. The action is non-stop and reveals a lot of information that we previously didn't know. And through all of it, Rob remains completely humble.By far my favorite book and I plan on buying it again through Audible to listen while running.

O'Neill's excellent page-turning narrative deserves a spot high on the very short list of the best first person war-related books. His style is engaging and his personal and professional stories demonstrate the best in American determination, wit and humor. The reader is literally in Rob's hip pocket during his trials during BUD/S and advanced SEAL training, assignment to the teams, the mundane and hair raising missions, as well as a riveting description of the raid to kill bin Laden. He balances the technical, military and personal sides of his career with skill and humility. The only reason it took me two days to read it is that I started at 10PM the night I downloaded it. Highest recommended for anyone vaguely interested in the topic.

It was the summer of 2014, and my wife and I were passing through Butte, Montana, on a long-distance road-trip from Arizona to Banff. At the same time, we said why would anyone want to live here. Well, as it turns out, a whole lot of good people live there, including one young man who had an incredible journey from Butte to Abbottabad, Pakistan. The Operator is the recently published book by Navy Seal Robert J. O’Neill, who is best known for firing the shots that killed Osama Bin Laden. This is a fascinating and well written story of men doing difficult things from their initial training to missions abroad and the challenges they face with their families, their friends and with their fellow operators. While O’Neill participated in 400 missions during his career, it was surprising the number of historically significant missions he was involved with. Previously, this reader did not know that he was involved with the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, when Somali pirates had taken over the Maersk Alabama. He was also in Paktika Province (Afghanistan), when Bowe Bergdahl deserted. O’Neill and his team hunted for Bergdahl as did my paratrooper son. When my son mentioned that Seals would go on missions with his team, I wondered if it could have been O’Neill and his guys. While the world knows about the killing of Bin Laden, O’Neill fills in the details on what actually went on inside that compound, and the tenseness of the operation. This story also makes one realize that war is a young man’s game, and this reader remains thankful that there still are Americans who serve a purpose that is greater than themselves. Read this book and be inspired!

Too Fat to Fish, by Artie Lange Anthony Bozza

From Publishers Weekly

This debut memoir from the comedian best known as Howard Stern's radio show sidekick is scrappy, funny, tumultuous and profane, just like its author. Lange, a self-proclaimed fat guy with a heroin problem, is difficult to love, but easy to like, his shaggy-dog life story full of derogatory self-awareness and cheerful vulgarity (often in the form of casual profanity and sexism). Many episodes from this life story will be familiar to Stern listeners, including the infamous "Pig Story," wherein Lange snorts cocaine while in full pig costume on the set of television's MADtv. Less familiar to fans will be a sobering account of Lange's suicide attempt and fond childhood memories of his beloved father. Lange's outrageous and horrific behavior involves prostitution, jail time and several trips to rehab; perhaps the saddest recurring theme is the frequency with which Lange thanks someone who's helped him, only to reveal that that person is no longer a part of his life. Glossing over Lange's penchant for alienating people is just one oversight that keeps this warts-and-all memoir from feeling fully honest. Still, for those with a taste for his aggressive, self-loathing brand of humor will find this volume full of compulsively readable stories. Photos. As someone who has never really listened to Howard Stern, I wasn't sure if I'd like this when so many reviews are from fans of the show.Let me just say, this is a fantastically well written book. I read a lot of celebrity memoirs, and I think this one quickly made the short list of books I'd recommend everyone read.Artie is a master storyteller. The book is a chronological tale winding through his life, with all the associated ups and downs. He comes off in equal parts as a guy you'd love to hang out with, and a guy you'd be too embarrassed to bring around your family. There are some fairly dark moments in the book, and the drug addiction is a recurring theme because it's a big part of his life. I think it's great that he wants to get past the addiction and hope it happens for him.I'm so glad I picked this up when I saw it in a promo email.

Very similar in prose and content as the other book he has authored, the name of which slips my mind at the moment. Despite several stories being retold or similar to ones heard in the other bestseller, there is enough original Artie Lange storytelling here to keep true fans entertained, and should not disappoint fan's of the Stern Show either, as his years at the hit radio show are heavily discussed throughout the book, as well as Artie's earlier life. Artie writes from a place of self-loathing and the dark, dirty and destructive humor he is known for in his Stand-up routines and radio personality are on every page in this book. Fans of Lange should not miss this book, and this would be a good time to pick it up if you haven't read it already as Lange is about to co-star in the new HBO series about life as a comedian called "Crashing". Looks promising, hope he can make a comeback. He was one of the best parts about the Stern Show when it was arguably at it's best.

This is a FUN READ about Artie's crazy life and career in comedy. His on again, off again battle with drug addiction and how it interfered with his personal life and career is eerily familiar to fans of other comic geniuses like Chris Farley and John Balushi. Artie is no Farley or Balushi, but his life's story makes for a very entertaining read! I certainly hope Artie is able to hold back his demons and avoid the sad ending that Farley and Balushi endured. I recommend this book to anyone interested in reading funny stories or learning how comedians break into show biz.

Artie has had a roller-coaster of a life and he pulls no punches even when telling many very embarrassing stories about himself. I think Artie Lange will do almost anything for a joke, even making fun of the web-site where people are taking bets when he will die (he's a heavy opiate abuser and he is very honest about that also...) All the skinny on his life doing stand-up, and his years on the Stern show, but not nearly as interesting, to me at least, as the follow-up book "Crash and burn".

Artie bares a lot in this book. It's a nostalgic look at a NJ suburban childhood. But what is SO GREAT is Artie's ability to tell a story. I was teary eyed most of the time reading it, and some of the tears were from laughter! This is a great book for anyone wanting to remember the searing agony and ecstasy of adolescence. His courageous and self-effacing honesty really impressed me. Whether it's losing his virginity, or adolescent screw-ups, the book is a page-turner. Thanks Artie for a great book.

Great read even if you are not a fan of him or the stern show. He is brutally honest bout his life and is a page turner and will make you laugh and sad in the same chapter at times. Best line from his drug dealer" you are taking to many Percocet you ever thought abou heroin it's better for you liver"

If you're a big fan of Artie Lange, you'll enjoy this book. If you have only a passing interest in him, as I do, it's only OK.The style of the 'writing' feels like a transcript of stories read into a recorder and were promptly typed up and printed. It can be difficult to read at times because the train of thought wanders away from the original point or story. I'm obviously not a stickler for grammar or syntax, but the only way that I could get through it was to hear Artie's voice in my head. The writing is a definite distraction, but definitely Artie. The stores are mostly interesting and a good profile of his life. However, for someone who has gone through so much turmoil and strife, I wouldn't call it gritty. The book seems like a cathartic exercise for him to admit a few wrong doings and apologize to some folks he's wronged. In a lot of places it feels a little shallow. Then again, it is an autobiography, and things may be that simple for Artie. It feels true and honest, but ultimately a bit flat for me.I actually think that the audio book may have been more enjoyable so that I could hear Artie tell the stories in his own voice. Ultimately, it's an interesting profile of an addict and save for the fame he's enjoyed in his life, is probably extraordinarily similar to every other addict out there.

Stand-up comic, TV/film actor, and Howard Stern Show sidekick Artie Lange offers this heartfelt, sometimes raunchy 2008 autobiography. The story is told in the same distinctive voice that Lange uses on the Stern show. There are plenty of fun moments, but also despair from the premature demise of his father and subsequent repeated struggles with drugs and alcohol. Many of the stories have already been explored at length on-air, but Lange does provide some further details on most as well as one new revelation. Perhaps the best part for Artie's fans is the sixteen pages of color photographs. Howard Stern wrote the photo-heavy forward. Co-writer Anthony Bozza has also assisted on the recent celebrity biographies of Eminem and Slash, and seems to have helped Artie assemble a coherent, readable narrative. This was a quick read but with Amazon's discount it cost less than fourteen bucks during its week of release.

After the Shot Drops, by Randy Ribay

From School Library Journal

POPGr 8 Up—A dually narrated story of two teen boys, Bunny and Nasir, struggling with a dying friendship shapes Ribay's latest. Nasir feels abandoned after Bunny leaves their school to attend an upscale private school to play basketball and is dating Keyona, a girl he had always been interested in. The season is going well and the team, led by Bunny, is on its way to winning a state title. But Nasir's friend Wallace is digging himself deeper into debt and physical trouble, placing bets on high school games and against Bunny's specifically. Nasir then becomes complicit in sabotaging Bunny's chances with explosive and life-altering consequences. Not only is the book well-paced with short chapters switching perspectives, the secondary characters are rich in detail, and Bunny and Nasir are fully realized protagonists with families, friendship, school, and sports. Drama propels the story forward while its emotional appeal builds empathy for both boys' circumstances. Seamlessly, tension exacerbates the weighty choices that come with their responsibilities. And while the climax is predictable, it feels inevitable. The trajectory of each boy's future is in the hands of the third teen, Wallace. Without a doubt, Ribay's compelling book belongs on the shelf alongside contemporary heavy-hitters like Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give, Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds's All-American Boys, and Nic Stone's Dear Martin. VERDICT A must-have for YA shelves.—Alicia Abdul, Albany High School, NY

Review

"Ribay’s depictions of Bunny’s and Nasir’s lives are beautifully—if not tragically—drawn...[Ribay] painstakingly shows the state of (sometimes violent) desperation for many young men of the inner city, buoyed only by the distant chance of a better life through stardom. Despite its downbeat aspects, the story nevertheless manages to infuse humanity into the boys’ lives by showcasing the importance of family, the value of friendship, and the importance of courage in the face of difficult situations."  — Booklist "A well-executed book featuring complex, diverse characters we rarely meet—a real winner for its heartbeat, compassion, and integrity."--Kirkus, STARRED review"Without a doubt, Ribay’s compelling book belongs on the shelf alongside contemporary heavy-hitters like Angie Thomas’s The Hate U Give, Brendan Kiely and Jason Reynolds’s All-American Boys, and Nic Stone’s Dear Martin."--School Library Journal, STARRED review"As the boys take tentative steps to salvage their friendship, they navigate high-stakes choices and consider the value of loyalty, integrity, and sacrifice in a story driven by fast-paced drama on and off the court."-Publishers Weekly, STARRED review"Readers will race through the intrigue and volatile basketball action to the explosive conclusion."--Horn Book Magazine

I finished this book in 4 sittings. It probably could have been less if I had the time. I did not want to put it down. Great story, with complex characters and twists. And it is not a book that is just for basketball fans. Basketball is just a part of the story, but nowhere near the whole thing.

Excellent read. Thought provoking. Page turner.

Like a great basketball game, this book is fast paced with lots of surprising turns that made it totally engrossing. There aren't many YA books that do this good a job exploring complicated male relationships. Ribay shows us the pressures put on Bunny and Nasir by their friends and family and how difficult it can be for them to communicate their need for help. While the basketball scenes are riveting, it's the story of how these friends challenge and support each other that really made this a page turner for me.

Randy Ribay has produced a truly engaging book, with two central characters who are both fully developed, conflicted and conflicting individuals--boys who run toward and away from their problems in different ways for different reasons. This is an original, thought provoking, thoroughly un-put-down-able book from start to finish. The plot summary you can find in other reviews and at the top of this page. All I'll add is that I read this over a weekend, and was fully invested in these two characters from the beginning. Ribay has constructed real and relatable and interesting boys with thoughts, worries, desires, and concerns that feel neither contrived nor trite. His plot develops seamlessly and cleanly, up to the end, and I found myself so engaged in the journey of both characters I couldn't stop reading until I finished the last word on the last page.

Couldn't put it down!

As a former junior high school English teacher, I am always on the lookout for books that will appeal to reluctant readers, books with a strong positive message and engaging, relatable characters. Randy Ribay's "After the Shot Drops" delivers on all accounts. Though basketball is an ongoing theme in this book, you do not have to have an in depth knowledge of the game to thoroughly appreciate the novel.Told in alternating chapters from the points of view of the two main characters, Bunny and Nasir, "After the Shot Drops" engages the reader at once. Bunny is a star basketball player who in tenth grade has been recruited to attend an exclusive Catholic school. His acceptance of this opportunity means that he must leave behind all his friends and teammates at Whitman High, the local public school. Nasir, also a player but not as talented as Bunny, is Bunny's best friend, but he has conflicting feelings about him: he is envious of Bunny's talent and opportunities, and he resents the fact that the girl on whom he has had a crush since junior high is now dating Bunny. Complicating matters is Nasir's slightly older cousin, Wallace, who is openly disdainful of Bunny and influences Nasir in a profoundly negative way. Though his difficult life circumstances may make some readers sympathize with him, Wallace is the closest thing to a villain in this book, and he precipitates a near tragedy toward the end.I loved the strong and realistic characters, not only Bunny, Nasir, and Wallace, but also Bunny's father, who operates an ethnic bookstore teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. The few female characters are a little more idealized, especially Keyona, Bunny's girlfriend, a strong, intelligent, and beautiful young black woman who is wise beyond her years. Though this is primarily a "boys' book," it will definitely appeal to girls as well. If I were still teaching, I would certainly teach this book, as there is so much to discuss in terms of values, friendship, honesty, and doing the right thing, even when it is hard. I recommend that parents and kids read this book together, as it will undoubtedly open the door to a number of good discussions.Highly recommended without reservation.

Ribay's novel is a fantastic, hard-to-put-down read. Told by alternating narrators, Bunny and Nasir, we see these two best friends drift apart, then back together as Bunny leaves their high school behind for an elite private school where he is the star of the basketball team.Nasir feels betrayed by Bunny leaving him behind, and is concerned for his cousin Wallace who is facing eviction. As he attempts to help Wallace, he begins to see that his cousin is in way over his head, yet he sticks with him.Bunny is seeing great success on the basketball court, but he doesn't feel accepted at his new school and questions his choice to leave his high school and friends behind. As Bunny's team continues to win game after game, moving ahead in the post-season playoffs, the stakes get higher for his team to win, and higher for Wallace, who is betting against Bunny's team. Nasir is caught in the middle, a tough place to be, as he wants to help both of his friends.Ribay's novel left me wanting to talk about it with someone, wanting to hand it off to my teen readers. Both Nasir and Bunny are characters you'll be rooting for and identify with, and even Wallace, with all of his problems, is someone you will feel for. This is a fantastic novel for both male and female readers and Ribay has perfectly captured the voices of teens and a situation that is complex and realistic. I loved that this is a sports book with depth and a bigger story than just winning or losing a game. I loved that Ribay incorporates literature and books into the story. This is a novel you won't want to miss!
