This is a very helpful book for most anyone who is new to the process of auditioning for the world of professional theater written by an experienced casting director who is also an actress. There are several books out on this subject. This one was recommended to me by the casting director of a regional theater company. The first chapter, which covers the emotional baggage that actors bring to auditions was especially helpful to me. The following chapters give a good overview of the audition process, so you know what to expect, and much good advice about preparing material for presentation.

Best audition book ever. Joanna Merlin is a Master. The book is accessible and worth every penny. Her advice and pointers come from a place of true knowledge and immense experience. If you're an actor who wants to audition well, buy this book!

I am a voice actor and have had trouble with my auditions in the past. I found this book while book surfing at Barnes and Nobles and read the first couple pages. I was hooked. It was as if the author had stepped into my skin to write this book. Every fear you have ever had as an actor, every insecurity, every inane thought is in this book, because the author has experience as an actress and a casting director and knows these thoughts from her personal experience. She tells you how to have confidence in your read, what the directors may be thinking, how to prepare properly for an audition. it is honestly the best audition advice I have ever seen or heard, and I've heard a lot of it. I bought it and it is worth every single penny. Though I do not act for film, I am easily able to apply many of the techniques and advice for cold reading and voice acting. I highly recommend this book.

The subtitle is no joke: Joanna Merlin's book is certainly Actor-Friendly. Auditioning is a terrible process for all parties involved. Auditors and auditioners both know that an actor cannot truly demonstrate the breadth and depth of their skill in a five minute general audition, nor a callback. But this is the process by which we cast shows, and until someone figures out a better way to do it, it's the one we're stuck with.Joanna rightly points this out in her opening, and goes to great lengths to get the actor to relax and take a positive (and more psychologically healthy) perspective towards the audition process. Her tips help bolster self-confidence, relaxation, acceptance of not getting a part, and a spirit of playing. She also gives several anecdotal stories from her own experiences in the business, supporting her advice with real-world examples.The meat and potatoes of the book is her actual advice on what to do in order to prepare and deliver an audition and callback, with chapters on general advice, advice for camera, and advice for musicals. She gives solid advice for monologue selection, the key points to hit for swift text analysis, making your characterization distinct (here her training in the Michael Chekhov technique shows), and later a more practical walkthrough of the event itself.This text is not a magical cure-all, nor a guarantee that you're going to land your next role. I'll be honest and tell you that I didn't. This book, however, did certainly helped me prepare and understand what was going on during the callback, and how to approach and understand why I might not have gotten the part (which, when I later talked to the director, turned out to be accurate). If you're an actor who is consistently anxious about auditioning, and gets terribly discourage or even depressed by not getting the role, absolutely read this book. Its biggest value is in shifting your perspective. If you're an actor who is comfortable with auditioning, then you've probably got a system that lets you deal with the stress, anxiety, and nerves already, but this book may be worth it for you to read Joanna's recommendations and anecdotes.

I've read dozens of books on acting, and Audition is one of the best. Ms. Merlin, who originated the role of the mother in Fiddler on the Roof, packs a great deal of useful advice taken from her decades as a professional (read: paid) actor and casting director, and her thorough knowledge of the industry (both film and theater) comes through on every page. More than a book about auditioning, Audition covers all aspects of the acting profession. Most valuable to me was the chapter on acting choices, which outlines in the clearest terms I've ever seen how to analyze a scene for acting by using Merlin's nine steps. Also welcome is her firm but loving admonishments that we actors need to hear. It's like having the perfect Jewish mother give you advice on your acting career. Nu?

I originally bought this because I had recently purchased one of Warhol's prints and thought it would be cool to learn more about the history of it. After I received it though, I found myself poring through it time and again, reliving the genius of warhol over and over.This documents practically every known work of Warhol's, from his early days sketching shoes to his later, more famous works of celebrities in the 80s. Some people will assuredly buy it for it's coffee table bling, but if you do so, please do yourself a favor and read through it ad really enjoy the works of one of the world's most prolific and revolutionary artists.

Every serious art gallery that sells Warhol artwork owns this book. It explains the details of his artworks and lists print quantities and nuances in the print series. Some of the pictures are pornographic, so it's not for younger eyes. A must for any pop art afficianado.

The definitive book on Andy's lithographs. It expands the Feldman & Shellman catalog quite substantially, unearthing a lot of gems that were left out of the original catalog raisonne.

I have been using several of the Look Fabulous Forever products for over two years and have been very pleased with them. I also enjoy Tricia’s blog so it was only natural that I would want to read her book. She shared wonderful ideas about positive ways to enjoy the third act of your life. Her ideas on exercise made me look at it in a different light. Now instead of thinking of it as something dreadful I view it as a way to improve the quality of the life that I have left which could be 20 or more years. I think everyone could benefit for her experience, research and personal wisdom. I would highly recommend this book.

Tricia does a great job empowering mature women to feel good about themselves. She is a true inspiration. I love her make-up tutorials and her products are wonderful.

Lots of good health advice. Also cosmetic guidelines. Enjoyed the book very much. Buy it, you won't be disappointed if you are looking for honest and sometimes funny comments on the state of "things" in the third stage of life.

I assumed this book would be filled with clever tips and tricks for aging gracefully. As her YouTube videos are fabulous. Sadly it was just mediocre read not a lot of new information.

This is my second year following Tricia Cusden, and using her ‘Look Young Forever’ products. I had been unhappy with my makeup. I did all the right things, cleansed, conditioned my skin and I have good genes, but my makeup was not looking the best. Somehow I happened upon Tricia’s YouTube video, and decided to purchase some of her products. They arrived in a very stylish silver bag, and the next day I started using her products. Oh, boy, was I ever surprised. If you could only purchase one product, I would suggest the Silk Face Prime. Your face does indeed feel like silk, and your foundation glides on. I also found her video instructions to be more than helpful. I am a convert to her products, and I only use her products.Tricia’s Book is very helpful. Everything she has related in her videos and more is encapsulated in this book. I would suggest starting at the first page and reading right through, but you can skip to chapters that may fill your needs. This is the first time since my twenties when I feel that I really look good. My face glows, and the colors I have chosen all compliment each other. I have also become more daring in my clothing colors, and the lines of clothing I purchase. I wear foundation almost every time I go out. On rare occasions I will apply the Face Prime and cheek blush, freshen my eyebrows, and go out for a walk or some exercise or to the market. In this book, you will glean ideas on how to present yourself at your most glorious best, and you will feel better about yourself.Growing older is not for sissies, they say, and we can feel our best. The women Tricia presents in the photos are real women looking their best, or just learning to prepare their faces to look their best which results in feeling better. I know what colors look best on me, what shape I am, and how to choose clothing that best suits my shape. I receive Tricia’s email letters and suggestions and new product selections. It is very easy to select your products, the products themselves are very attractive in their containers, and they arrive via mail quickly. I like it better than the volume 1. It appears that the authors have taken more time to get the information, not just accurate. but also easier to digest. One of complains about volume1 was lack of illustrations. This book has many more illustrations, graphs and block diagrams to assist with the understanding of the structure of software modules. Such a structure illustration does replace 1000 words.Windows Internals version 6 remains to-date the best internals book and has not yet been replaced by the next edition.It is obvious that this book does not repeat information from Volume 1, I am simply commenting on the impression I have after reading both. And because this book, as a source of information, is a supplement to an earlier less friendly volume I give it only 4 stars.

The reason for the caveat is that the writer makes a lot of assumptions about the level of knowledge of the reader. If you have a good understanding about operating systems and are looking for more detailed information about the Windows specific implementation then this is a great book and exactly what you are looking for. If you are not that knowledgeable about operating systems you are going to spend a great deal of time looking things up and your progress through the book will be greatly hampered.

A must have for anyone who troubleshoots in a Windows-based environment on a daily basis. Couldn't ask for a better reference.

Needed something updated over my older Win 7 reference that specifically talks about the internal tools. If you tried to find this info on Microsoft's page, you'd have to do a little digging. This puts it all in one place!

What else can I say? This is my ultimate reference book on Windows (I'm referring to Parts 1 and 2). I source this before Microsoft TechNet or the Web because chances are what I'm looking for is there and I can find it quicker than online sourcing.

Digital edition suffers from bad picture quality. The contents is excellent. I use it time to time, only when I need deeper dive into specific area. I usually find answers 80-90% times. I recommend for professionals and advanced.

There is no other book like this for knowing how really things work inside Windows, not for beginers of course but it is a source of knowledge for either both troubleshooters and developers.

Russinovich has the patience to track the evolution of NT from its origins in VMS. You won't write drivers or services from these books, but you'll understand the rationale guiding the developers. The details are in the "SDK"s. These two volumes (used to be one), are what you want to understand what the architects intended. David Solomon was part of the DEC team from which NT was spawned. These books explain new functionality from the perspective of engineers who knew the original. It is much more readable than the VMS Internals manuals, required reading for driver writers, and recommended for application developers.

I am going to be very blunt and direct in my review of this book, so buckle up...The ONLY reason I bought the paperback rather than the kindle was to support the author because I know him and wanted to support him. Honestly, I did not have very high expectations but wanted to give it a chance because this novel is also in my favorite genre: historical fiction.Again, I really did not know what to expect, I thought that maybe I would partially enjoy this book. I happily admit that I was WRONG!!! I was hooked into this story from the onset, I immediately felt as if I were there with the protagonist, my mind's eye very quickly began the mental picture...no...movie... of everything as it played out... and this feeling lasted throughout the duration of this book. I quickly came to hate to antagonist and their band of flunkies...Mr. Davis' writing style is magnificent, the transitions between narrators within the chapters are flawless and the evolution between events have a natural flow that make this a very good read. He even went as far as to maintain the integrity of the era by using Latin terminology on some things. Have no fear, there is a glossary in the back that will interpret those words and terms into modern English. However, you won't use that for long because the style of writing will allow you to immediately know what is being talked about without having to flip to the back of the book.Furthermore, Mr. Davis uses his military experience and knowledge a great deal in the story where appropriate, which is phenomenal (I've read books where the author tries to emulate military life and all I can do is shake my head and think... "Nope"). The only regret I have about this book is that it ended, and it's an ending that leaves you thirsting for more... I look forward, with exuberance, to the next installment of this series.This young man is going places within the literary world.

This is an excellent book by a new author on the scene. I really enjoyed it. The people and world of ancient Rome really come alive in the pagers of this book. Before you know it, you are so immersed that you feel like you personally know each of the characters and find yourself living, laughing, hoping and crying with them. Did not want to put the book down once I had started reading it and can't wait for the next in the series!

Sublime. I felt like I was there, following these men and their lives. It was written in such a personal manner that I couldn't help but be drawn into the political intrigue, and the machinations of the Roman empire.I cannot wait to read the next book in the series.This book really does make me appreciate that I am not a politician! I don't think much has changed over the last few millennia!I loved that the author put a glossary at the back of the book, which I found particularly helpful.

Everyone who has read my reviews know that I enjoy books about Ancient Rome and the Roman Legions, but only if they are well written, This book I'm happy to say is not only well written but the story is well thought out and exciting. It is two a.m. as I post this. I just finished reading an excellent new novel by Vincent B. Davis II, a fresh, new talent with the ability to engage the reader completely, taking them back to a fascinating time in history, the Great Roman Empire. The title of the book is The Man With Two Names. I was amazed at the author's knowledge of the lifestyle of this long ago time, and his thorough research shines in the details encompassed throughout the book. Not a history lesson, but a very easily flowing story with characters of great depth. They demonstrate his understanding of a soldier's life, which is timeless, be it several years ago or several centuries ago. Morals tend to withstand the ages. I eagerly am awaiting his next novel.

On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, The Man With Two Names by Vincent B. Davis is lightly salted asparagus spears. Roasted in the oven, the asparagus becomes crispy and sharp. Not only are they good for you, but they're tasty, too.Quintus and Lucius leave their home town, Nursia, to seek purpose in Rome. Quintus goes in hopes of finding a patron to send food to Nursia, and Lucius plans to join the army. What they discover is a complicated political climate that threatens their own goals, and they must choose who to swear fealty to.Vincent B. Davis II brought the Roman time period to life for the modern reader. He captured the realities and ideals of the army, and appropriately so, since he has served his country as well, which I found out in the author bio. However, in a few instances, the story pacing jarred me right off the page, but I climbed back into the story to find out what would happen. Overall, I enjoyed experiencing Rome through Quintus and Lucius.If you are intrigued by Roman history, The Man With Two Names is for you.

I actually felt the Rome of antiquity. Real life in a turbulent world of class domination and a place where courage, self-doubt and fear of not being able to realize ones' own destiny amidst power, greed and corruption are well detailed. All who are looking for a read that is both entertaining and has the feeling of realism and attention to historical fact NEED to get this book. Now.

The book is one I could not put down. It was done purely by excellent writing without recourse to violence. The war against the Germanic tribes only begins close to the end of the novel. I can't wait for the sequel.

As a few others have mentioned, this book really isn't for beginners, I'm very tech savvy and work in IT but have never been in the SQL world before, this book should have been a slam dunk to help get me comfortable but it wasn't.In the early chapters where the basic setups of the sample DB are discussed there are huge swaths of data that just isn't given to the reader and a "new to DB" user has no idea where the author is going or how to handle the steps. This lack of ramp up in the creation of the samples should be where we start using the building blocks of database construction instead of frustrating the new user.As a book for beginners with other DB expereince it would be a 5-star book, for users that are just being introduced to databases it's a 2. possibly even a 1 in my book.

This book is a excellent beginner's guide for any DBA or SQL Developer. It gets you started at a level that is easy to understand but yet comprehensive of the SQL Server 2012 suite of tools/apps. Yet it also deep enough that it is a excellent reference and does offer medium level material as well for more experience developers or DBAs.Great book, must have for your technical library.

I picked up this book after being asked if I knew MDX/SSAS which I did not. I went through this book with out any difficulties. I will say that I do have SSIS/SSRS experience and a high-level overview of SSAS so not all of the terms and ideas where new to me so that might have helped me. The book takes you through real world scenarios which I love more than non-pertinent examples in most books.If you want a great intro into BI I suggest checking this book out.

I think I'm going to be using this book for quite a while. It's not so big and chock full of publisher's fluff, it's concise and informative. I can actually sit and read this one without falling asleep. And I learn something every time I read it.

Bought this for a new hire with limited SQL experience. Is a well written book and explains topics well. Originally bought the Apress publishing equivalent. This is a much better easier to read book for a beginner DBA.

Much more than a "beginner's" guide, experienced programmers can also learn from this. I think it is misnamed, but it is a good book.

Clear and concise text, good examples and exercises. Covers everything I needed to know to start working with SQL Server and Management Studio and to reach a level of SQL competence that will allow me to write all the queries I need.

As good as his other books, I'll keep buying them as they come out.
