Transforming Grace by Jerry BridgesFew people have done a mighty work of shaping my view of Christian faith and theology like the late Jerry Bridges. This book originally was written in 1981 and it still packs a strong punch of sound biblical teaching on grace alongside a healthy view of progressive sanctification. Jerry Bridges is most known for his book, The Pursuit of Holiness, but this book, Transforming Grace is a work of great value as well. The whole crux of the book is an answer to the question; now that we are saved by grace, how do we live the Christian life? Countering the view that somehow grace is not needed or unnecessary for the daily Christian’s life, Jerry points us back to grace as fundamental to our life on Earth.In fleshing out what it means for the law of God to remain in effect for the Christian today, Jerry does an excellent job at explaining the difference between legalism and grace. He writes, “Under a sense of legalism, obedience is done with a view to meriting salvation or God’s blessing on our lives. Under grace, obedience is a loving response to salvation already provided in Christ, and the assurance that, having provided salvation, God will also through Christ provide all else that we need.” There is a change of reason or motive for following God’s moral commands when one operates under grace. No longer is the moral law a law which only condemns us but it is a moral guide, wisdom for the right path. Christ’s love compels us to love God through following his moral commands. This view of law brings freedom and relief to the Christian, not pushing us toward merit keeping obedience.Jerry gets to the heart of sanctification in his chapter entitled Holiness: A Gift of God’s Grace. He writes, “Sometimes we think of salvation as more like a sports coat and a pair of slacks. We think God gives us the sports coat of justification by His grace, but we must "buy" the slacks of sanctification by our own efforts. But salvation is like a suit. It always comes with the jacket of justification and the pants of sanctification. God never gives one without the other because both are necessary to have the complete suit of salvation. Sanctification in us begins as an instantaneous act of the Holy Spirit and is carried forward by His continued action in our lives." (116) There is a very real sense where the believer must put to death deeds of the sinful nature and yet we don’t even do this activity by our own mental efforts. God’s work starts in election and ends in glorification for the Christian, and every step of the way God is working in and through him to conform him to the likeness of Jesus Christ.Go get this book and in fact by 5 or 10, this is truly a book that will change lives because it changed my heart many years ago when I first read it.Thanks to Tyndale Publishers for the copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Becoming a huge fan of this dude.If I didn’t already know and love the author, I probably wouldn’t have picked this book up because the colors on the cover hurt my eyes, the words are tiny, and it’s one of those books where the pages are that awkward size that it hurts your thumbs to hold the pages open. I’m literally in pain right now.But DANG it was good! Totally worth a hand cramp and the car sickness I experienced while reading it.These words have been stuck in my head for weeks:“Guilty, vile and helpless we,Spotless Lamb of God was He;Full atonement! Can it be? Hallelujah! What a Savior!”Think about it.Guilty. Vile. Helpless. ——Spotless. Lamb. God.FULL atonement.Wow. What extravagant, undeserved grace.The basis of this book is Galatians 3:3: “Are you foolish? After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?”Grace is not only the basis of our salvation but also the basis of the entire Christian life. Following salvation, we do not have to live as if we are “paying God back.” We never could. R.C. Sproul says that if we do that, we may begin to think that “we will go to heaven because we deserve to be there.”John Newton got it right in the hymn “Amazing Grace” - “‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.” Grace at salvation. Grace in sanctification. Grace in glorification.Old way of the Law —> external code, demanding, hostility, fear, workingNew way of the Spirit —> internal desire, enabling, delight, gratitude, relying“Grace ceases to be grace if God is compelled to bestow it on the basis of human merit... Statements about the goodness of grace are sometimes so unbelievably good.May we cling to this, both in salvation and until glory: “Nothing in my hand I bring. Simply to Thy cross I cling.”

Since graduating from college a few years ago, I’ve been looking for books that would help me develop cultural awareness, lead me in my spiritual path, yet still challenge me intellectually. (Trying to keep sharp!) This was perfect for that.I’m a huge fan of the Ravi Zacharias & Vince Vitale collaboration, having read their book "Why Suffering?" two years ago. Like their original collaboration, this was written so accessibly. I love the personal stories and illustrations used by both authors. It’s quite relational, and the reader gets a legitimate sense of the warmth and genuine personalities of the authors.Yet their insights are most valuable. In the chapter on “Scientism” for example, Dr. Vitale explains the fine-tuning argument as a reason for why God exists. Later at the conclusion of the chapter, he connects the philosophical argument with the personal, writing“God not only designed the universe; he designed Alva [read the chapter for her story], and He named her, and He has plans for her life as carefully fine-tuned as His plan for the cosmos. And the same is true of each of us…May that signify to us that our lives began only because God chose us before the foundation of the world. Because of God, we can know we have a purpose. And if we let Him, God will fine-tune us for life—a life free of shame and guilt, a life full of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”I just thought that was so cool. Not only did it help to learn the fine-tuning argument in the beginning of the chapter, but Vitale made it click* of how a God who fine-tunes the world could fine-tune the humans that he (or she?) created as well.There are so many gems in this book. I really encourage you to read it, especially if you’re in college or have just graduated. Dr Vitale and Dr Zacharias both address worldviews that I think are more prevalent in the university (and secular culture in general) than the other world religions. I think it’s an absolute must for the college student. Most of my professors/peers/coworkers had/have a worldview defined by Atheism, Scientism, Humanism, Pluralism, Relativism, and Hedonism, and it’s so fascinating to see these different perspectives examined in a gracious manner. The two authors are obvious Evangelical Christians, but I think that they write in such a way that is accessible and helpful to anyone. Check it out!

The book was thought provoking and well written. The authors did a great job comparing Christianity with other world views. This is a book that makes you think and it is an interesting read with good stories which are weaved into the arguments the authors are making. The authors did a great job showing the weakness of the secular worldview which is manifested in atheist, relativism, humanism, hedonism, scientism and others. This is being contrasted with Christianity in a way that makes one appreciate the coherence of the Christian worldview and how Jesus Christ fills the vacuum that secularism leaves.The authors are not only great scholars with immense knowledge within philosophy, worldview's and other topics, but are also frequently meeting real people who hold different positions which the book describes. This makes this book personal, real, and scholarly. I enjoyed reading this book a lot and would recommend anyone to get it.

With reason and heart driving the book, Ravi Zacharias and Vince Vitale lay out the major and influential "partial" truths our culture has been enculturated with, yet ultimately found lacking: Atheism, Scientism, Pluralism, Humanism, Relativism and Hedonism.Clearly written and imbued with poignant illustrations, heartfelt stories and rational support from the world’s leading Christian (and non-Christian) thinkers, this is a much-needed anchor and stake in this post-truth, post-Christian era.God’s truth stands: “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35). This is a beautiful, inspiring and thought-provoking book armed with truth and love— it seeks to show that ultimate meaning and purpose point to a God who loves us and seeks for us to know the Truth, which is God Himself.

This is one apologetics book I could not put down, and will re-read. The culture of my neighborhood is probably the most hedonistic, and seems to be getting more selfish than ever. Everything from drug and alcohol abuse is on the rise. Yet we are very well off in regard to material possessions. It is a moral disaster. It seems is if for the most part the general culture of the U.S. is degrading it self in to a maze of self deception, and a form of insanity. More and more, desire after desire most men and women in this culture no longer know who they are. Gender identity is now a major issue according to the media and government. If you don't know what your meant to be you, y0ur living in a pool of self deception. Christ brings the real man or woman back to sanity. I really don't know how to reach a people who seem to want to be lost in this self made maze of despair. I pray that people will read this book, and recover the identity they have lost.

Ravi is definitely an intellectual apologist of serious magnitude. I had to read several paragraphs a couple of times to digest them - even had to pull out a dictionary a fee times. :) But it was well worth the effort! Ravi strips away the rainbow hued varnish that disguises today's secular movements to reveal the dangerous and inherently flawed logic of those beating the drums for the masses. He helps educate his readers with much needed critical thinking skills for these crazy times. Then there were Vince's chapters that were much easier reading and provided wonderful examples of the science and math based communities looking into their own lacking logic; I esp. appreciated the massively extended digit set of probabilities around our perfect little world functioning as amazingly predictable as it does. I've already leant it to family and bought copies for friends. Meaningful discussion material!

This is a really fun book. I actually started a Bucket List then saw this on Amazon and bought it right away. What makes it so great is that is has different themes such as Adventure, Travel, Food & Beverage plus many others. It lists hints in each category, ideas that maybe one never even considered adding. I wouldn't have ordered it, if I would have been able to have a "sneak-peak". Very basic.

I could have written this online myself - not that much help in gathering thoughts. I paid for essentially nothing but a nice cover and perhaps the organization of information in one place.

I loved joining all the kitty characters in this wild ride through their (our) afterlife. I’ve loved & lost many kitty family members over the years. I miss them & think about them often. I’ve never thought that they may be missing me too. The idea of their spirits watching me on “TV” or them dropping into the back of my car to escort me to pick out the next furry member of my household never occurred to me until Wendy Ledger's book. I laughed, cried & felt more hopeful that the saying is true: Love lasts furever. Thanks for this wonderful book.

Great fun read. I really like that it is told from the perspective of the cat. The characters feel real and I could really see the cats I know acting and talking like that.

I really was surprised with how much I enjoyed this book. I can usually figure out where a story is going, but I was stymied time and again! The characters were carefully and meticulously developed and I thoroughly fell into the fantasy. I was given a promotional copy of this book and was asked to write an honest review. It was my pleasure. Loved the audio option !

People- buy this cookbook. I am an avid cook and I have cookbooks resting by my bedside table at night. But I still consider myself a novice, with zero formal training. The structure of this cookbook is brilliant. She gives you a recipe and then adds 2-3 "spin-offs" at the close of each recipe telling you how to riff on whatever ingredient or technique you just used to prepare the original dish. I mean, it's like jazz for cooking!The photos are drool-worthy and the ingredients are all things you will likely have at home or be able to grab with ONE trip to ONE store. There are a few exceptions, but not many and she notes these up front and offers substitutions.I cook for my family of 5 each day, while running my own business and minding the household duties. I am so excited to cook from this book and make it a regular staple.Something about Julia's manner reminds me of a mashup of Deb Perlman from Smitten Kitchen plus Ina Garten of Barefoot Contessa fame. She brings the "no nonsense, I cooked this in a tiny NY kitchen and tested it a thousand times" vibe of Deb with the basic, simple ingredients and "how easy is that?" vibe of Ina.The end of the book concludes with 7 lists of 7 things you can do with chicken, ground meat, pizza dough, seafood, etc. the versatility is endless. And helpful, come 6pm when you're staring a fridge with various leftovers that need a little transformation.Your families and belly will thank you! Dig in!(This is my own opinion. I paid full price for my book and have no connection to the author or Amazon. I hate reading reviews and feeling duped at the end by folks who got it in exchange for their 'honest' review.)

The book to replace all cookbooks! If I could give it 10 stars I would! I have so many cookbooks and barely use a handful on the regular. I have everything from Julia Child to Thomas Keller, and everything in between and THIS book is the one! I absolutely love all the recipes, they are so deliciois and easy. It really helped me become more of an independent cook because the "small victories" do stick and I find myself using the tricks I learned in this book even when I'm cooking something completely different. Plus, the spin-offs are just brilliant! Might have to buy a bunch and keep them on hand as gifts because this cookbook is just amazing!

I love this cookbook. I checked it out of the library and then decided I really needed one of my own. The merguez sausage recipe is great. I made it with lamb the first time and then flavored some venison from my son with the mix. Both were delicious and the "herby yogurt" goes on anything. The turkey meatballs are incredible made with turkey and ricotta cheese. Who knew? Julia is bright and breezy and very conversational in her delivery of the recipes. I think anyone would love this book.

A strong 4 stars for this book. First page through I didn't find it that exciting, but then I started cooking from it. I've made about 15 of the recipes, and almost all of them have been big hits. Best of all is the tone - I felt like she was there in the kitchen with me, telling me I could do it (working with yeast for rolls - not something I'm normally comfortable with - was easy with her instructions), letting me know I could use more or less of something or substitute. I'm an experienced home cook; this book was still worth my while.

The very first recipe I made from this book was her Aunt Reene’s chicken soup recipe. It was such a hit not only with my family but with me. I love my moms chicken soup so much that I was bias and partial to anyone else’s but this soup is amazing. I also really appreciate and love that she took the time to help you figure out how to use up left overs and how to switch a recipe with just a few swaps. This is really what makes this book so different. You will not regret this purchase and I’m so excited her new cookbook Now and Again is coming out. I actually began foodie fan girling her when she worked with Gwenyth Paltrow on Its all Good which is another favorite of mine all because of her. I will buy and cook anything this woman tells me to.

Great recipes of various ethnic and standard foods. Try the eggs on yogurt for a special treat. If I were to make one negative comment it would be that a little more spice and interest would have helped the bland tomato sauce for the meatballs. I continue to try various of the recipes with continued optimism. Many are quite wonderful.

I cannot speak highly enough about this cookbook! Every single recipe has knocked it out of the park. As an obsessive rule/recipe follower, I initially found that Julia’s casual, no-stress writing style made me a little nervous that I would misunderstand and screw something up. But happily it works out every time! My favorite parts are the spin offs after every recipe (2-4 suggestions for riffing off the original recipe, which are sometimes similar but often completely different recipes) and the “7 things” section in the back (7 things to do with leftover roast chicken, 7 ways to cook mussels, etc).

I bought this as a 30th birthday gift to myself. I'm a mother of two little ones and wanted a cookbook with recipes that I could make for the entire family, that were wholesome and delicious. That's exactly, what I got with this cookbook. The ground turkey and ricotta meatball recipe is a staple in our house. Julia's recipes are so easy to follow and can please any palette. The layout and photos of the cookbook are absolutely beautiful. I have every page book marked and look forward to making more of these recipes. This will definitely be a staple cookbook forever!

About the Author

Dr. Betsy Diamant-Cohen has been a children's librarian for more than 25 years, and has worked in public libraries, school libraries, academic libraries, non-profit libraries, children's museums, preschools, home-daycares and more. She has three children (who are now all adults!), a wonderful husband, and lots of stuffed animals. Her wealth of personal experience combined with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for giving all children equal chances to be successful has led to the development of the Mother Goose on the Loose early literacy program, the publication of several books, and the production of a few CDs. Diamant-Cohen was named a ""Mover and Shaker"" by Library Journal in 2004 and completed her doctorate in 2006.

I wanted to see what the program was based upon.

This resource is a no-brainer purchase for librarians, teachers, and day care workers. But parents (and grandparents!) should pick up a copy too. This would make a great baby shower gift for new parents. The author writes with the authority and intelligence of someone with a PhD, the experience of someone who has been a practicing librarian for years, and the sensitivity of a mother. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised (after surfing around on the web) to discover that Betsy Diamant-Cohen actually is all those things! No wonder this is such a great resource! Highly recommended.
