If you have been to Salt Lick in Driftwood Texas, you know how good their food is, and this little barbeque bible has the recipes directly from the owner. Fantastic cookbook, plus it is a very romantic look at this part of Texas, great little stories about how all this comes together. I made a brisket following the instructions in this book and nailed the taste and perfection that is Salt Lick barbeque!! This is a must have cookbook from the Austin Texas area.

I'd read about this restaurant and will be back in Austin on business next month, so I decided to buy this cookbook to learn more about Salt Lick. This book is lovely -- the pictures of the food makes your mouth water (as do the recipes) and the author shares the story behind this restaurant. You meet his wife, a woman of courage and strength, who has lived a full life despite her heath challenges. And, you meet his daughter, who had her wedding at the vineyard. Scott's love for his family and extended restaurant family is heartening. Since I recently purchased the book, I've only had time to make one recipe -- his peach pound cake. (Peaches are in, so why not?) Umm, good! I look forward to trying more of his recipes.Have I decided to wait up to four hours to eat at Salt Lick? You betcha! I've reserved an early morning flight and car rental and will head to Driftwood, TX for lunch. Since my husband won't be with me, I've promised to bring him back some of their BBQ sauce, which I'm hoping will lure him into a return trip to TX for to try Salt Lick's brisket. I just asked my husband if that sounds OK to him and he responded, "Sounds GOOD to me." Yes, we're southerners and LOVE barbecue.

Pros:- great pictures and nice quality print- the recipes and stories are awesome, great read! Try their sole slaw, it's to die for!- all you need to make good BBQ, almost as good as theirCons:- you would want to make every single recipe in this book and would want BBQ for all your meals

Seemed just another cookbook and was hoping for something different

No, this may not be a cookbook in the traditional sense, as an earlier reviewer complained. It does not contain elaborate, challenging recipes and cooking techniques. What it does contain is recipes of simple, delicious recipes of a differenr era. And I cannot wait to try them out myself. I wish I had my mother and grandmother's recipes to share with others. And there are many more recipes in this book that I had initially thought, and not all barbeque recipes and techniques. Just good, simple, delicious recipes of country folk.Overall, I loved the totality of this book. I have been eating at Salt Lick since the winter of 1973. Once discovered, my college friends and I made the 30 minute trip at least twice a weekend (they were open only Thursday to Sunday then). I can't say I ever remember seeing Scott there, but I definitely knew his mother and father. Thurman was always by the door, guarding his pit, and Hisako was in the dining room, making sure the customers had what they needed. I remember being there once with three of my buddies and two six packs of Lone Star. Hisako was amazed that 4 college students were going to drink all that beer!! She is such a sweet lady. We were there religiously several times every weekend, sometimes being the only ones there. We were amazed that the place wasn't full with people devouring the delicious BBQ. But by the end of my four years at college place was starting to get noticed and had large crowds on Saturdays and Sundays.I have so many fond memories of the place - the drives on 1826 back when it was undeveloped ranch lands, much like Scott describes growing up there, the staff there, the awesome BBQ, the building and the grounds, and, of course, Mr. Thurman and Mrs. Hisako. I love just thumbing through the book and looking at the pictures of the place and the countryside. What is the best BBQ joint in the country or Texas is arguable because everybody has their own ideas. But The Salt Lick is definitely my favorite.I thank Scott for writing this book and sharing his stories and recipes. Like I said, I wish I had my mother's and grandmother's recipes. And I am glad that there are people that will continue carrying on the Salt Lick tradition. That is so important in times like these when everything is about speed and convenience.Again, thank you, Scott. This book only deepens my love and respect for your family and restaurant.

bought this as a souvenir because we went to Salt Lick twice during our road trip through Texas. Good to have for the memories, though it's not really a recipe book.

Max Velocity also seems very calm ,cool and prossional and not full of himself like alot of other instructors in the firearm training world ,definatly buy this book and mosbys but be warned about mosby ,hes not as calm or well spoken as Max Velocity,hes more of a in your face ,yelling ,cussing type dude...which i love but alot of people dont.....and ignore ar15.com only negative thing ive ever read about MVT and it was them questioning saftey when theyve never seen a class of his and none of the critics there even gave a good case ,i got a real"civilians shouldnt learn this stuff "feel .Honestly ive asked three diffrent people with credible experience to look at the book and give me an opinion an and thry all ended up buying it .....buy it ....practice....and listen to MVT or John Mosbys camp when they speak...not some cops over the internet who dont think we are worthy of being prepared......sorry for the long review and rant ...guess i couldve just said buy this book

This is a excellent book on basic tactics and survival concepts involving defensive and offensive light infantry operations that someone may encounter during a SHTF/TEOTWAWKI event. There is excellent advice on equipment, weapons, optics, combat first aid, tactics, battle drills, and the necessary level of physical fitness required to conduct light infantry operations at the fire team and squad level. As someone who spent almost 25 years on active duty in the US Army in light infantry units I thought this book would be an interesting read since professional soldiers are always expanding their knowledge base on military history, battles, tactics and the teachings of other experts in the field. For anyone with extensive light infantry experience this book will be a good refresher of basic concepts. For someone who has never served in a Light Infantry unit or been involved with the 75th Ranger Regiment, Special Forces, Navy SEALs, or the Marines (all Marines are Infantry Riflemen first) the information is this book could mean the difference between life and death when the SHTF/TEOTWAWKI. Having said that, you can't just take the information and expect to become a expert and survive--you must learn the concepts, extensively practice the battle drills until they are second nature and ensure you are in good enough physical condition to actually perform infantry operations. Failure to do this means the bad guys or someone like me who is desperate enough to survive will have all your stuff when the SHTF. Buy the book!

With the help of my 13-yo daughter I can tell you Touch of Gold is a fantastic novel with plenty of twists and turns in it. Every time I was certain something was going to happen there was a major turn in events. Kora's perspective of the story was so much different from all the other stories about King Midas. It reminded me of the Harry Potter series. In every single book I always thought I knew what was going to happen and I was always wrong. I felt the same way when I read this book. Like most books about magic and mythology, Touch of Gold has a lesson to be learned. It shows we are not other people's mistakes. We are our own person no matter what other people do. I thought this book was really well written and I would definitely recommend it. I'm amazed how Annie took a typical Greek story and turned it into such a thrilling novel.

A Touch of Gold is a good story, entertaining with endearing characters. I did expect to enjoy it more though. It felt a tad bit predictable to me. I literally called some of the character motivations and actions before they happened, mostly in a joking sort of way, but then when it all went down, I was right almost to the detail.Positives are watching the main character, Kora, grow and develop over the course of the story. The first-person narration is compelling, and I liked her as a character. I loved the tie-in with the King Midas story, although I'm not sure why a Greek god had to be included when nothing else indicates that type of society. In fact, there is not a lot to indicate the society at all - Greek gods are mentioned, but the descriptions kind of feel medieval, so it's hard to tell. So, for me, the world-building is a bit flat. The romance is just so-so as well and extremely predictable. I did appreciate that the violence was not gratuitous, nor is there anything explicit in terms of the romance. It suits the age range really well. The magic of her gold curse is explained well, too, fantastic but also somewhat realistic, if that makes sense (more than just "Bam! You've been turned to gold forever!"). Also, if Hettie were my "friend" and stowed away, I'd have probably thrown her overboard myself.Solid debut, just missed the mark for me in a few key things; however, it does show promise for future books. It does leave the reader with a bit of a cliff hanger, and I am interested enough to read the sequel.

This book was amazing. Here are some things that make the book stands out.1. The story is from the pov of a curse person and someone of royalty.2. A twist of the prince charming trope. Thank you author.3. An awesome what if story deprived from mythology.Other than that, I enjoy the characters. They all felt real and understanding. The story left an open ended question about how Kora and Midas curse will be lifted if it's ever going to be and that is just fine with me. Leaves the reader to wonder how things will move forward now and how Kora and Royce will move forward after the ending. I wished this book have a sequel. I would love see these characters again and see Kora's life as a princess changes now that she's grown. I like how she used her curse to her advantage in some moments. I love seeing the villians get their comupends.There's just something about this book that I find a rarity in retellings/Fairytale. This kinda gives me a beauty and the beast feels because Kora, a cursed royal, sees herself as a monster and believes no one would understands her yet here's a young man who faces a dramatic experience with a curse and accept that it happened, moving on with his life instead of wallowing in grief. He sees pass her curse and sees her as a person, not something to take advantage of.

I love when authors play with a story we've known since we were kids, breathing new life and imagination into them.We've all heard various renditions of King Midas, the guy who wanted riches galore. He became able to turn anything into gold with his touch, which (of course!) ended up being his demise.In this version, during the moments when he realized his mistake, he accidentally turned a handful of items--including his daughter (Princess Kora)--into a golden statues. He manages to reanimate her, but he doesn't follow his wish's rules about fixing the rest of the items as well, so she turns back into gold again. Human, but with flesh, eyes, and bones that never allow the king or his people to forget that curses are often disguised as wishes.A decade has passed, the kingdom has grown weak, and people are too scared of the golden princess and her cursed kingdom to consider marrying her (which would help stabilize the power of the kingdom). She hides in the castle; she and her dad barely speak; her uncle runs interference between the two of them and the kingdom, itself.Then something happens that requires Kora to not only leave the castle grounds, but take to the sea on an adventure that will test this sheltered young woman in every way. Can she learn to read people? Can she make friends? Can she be brave? Can she do the one thing she has been scared of for most of her life?This is a fun adventure with a bit of romance for the teen reader on up who enjoys retellings, pirate adventures, and watching young women find their legs in this tricky world.

From time to time McHugo does present views that conflict with my own, but I find his perspective useful as a counterpoint.There are few books that I have read that offer this much value. The research is extraordinary and McHugo does a commendable job of diffusing complexity and communicating non-fiction in the manner of a storyteller.

What a great little book to supplement my middle schooler's math year. Every topic that he will study is in here written in very simple english that a middle school boy has no difficulty understanding. His text book is great but this little book is just perfect to cement the ideas that have already been taught in school. Plus - the ideas are presented in just a few pages so if he only needs to check on one or two things, he doesn't have to read it all.Furtermore, my mother in law is a retired high school math teacher who tutors now and she is considering buying this for the students that she tutors. While they may be farther down the road than my middle schooler, she thinks that the basics are presented well so that the student has a good foundation for future learning.I hope for good learning this year!

It covers major topics in both first and second year algebra and does it well. Despite this engaging motif, however, I cannot recommend the book for the confused student. For one thing, there are few, if any problems for practice.This book is, however, an excellent resource for the math teacher. The introduction to the book says that it is a reference book; it is not meant to be a student text. It gives clear explanations, and it goes far beyond first year algebra in its range. The explanations take some knowledge for granted, and an adult with a bit more math background will enjoy and appreciate it. It is an excellent resource, and if you are a teacher or tutor, I recommend the book highly.If you are a student looking for algebra help, I recommend both the text and the workbook titled "Algebra Survival Guide" by Josh Rappaport. There are literally hundreds of problems for practice, and explanations are clear. I suggest that you buy both the text and the workbook.
