According to The Business of Good, new businesses are adding "giving back" into their basic business plans. This adds value to the more traditional way of personal giving by donations or charity events. The idea of building a give-back strategy into any business is labeled as Social Entrepreneurship. Haber gives us an in-depth view of how this business of doing good has evolved and a "how to" map for those who choose this goal.Started by Millenials, it is my personal hope that after reading this relevant and well chronicled account that more companies will adopt this idea.A must read for anyone who cares about making changes in the current world. Haber writes with personal knowledge about this subject. May we have another "greatest generation" in the upcoming future.

Haber nailed it. A must read for all entrepreneurs or anyone wanting to make a difference. His examples in business, government and nonprofits made it such an easy read but completely inspiring at the same time.

An excellent book!
This is a very different book (in a good way) from your typical business case/advice on business publication. The author social entrepreneur Jason Haber intertwines case studies and anecdotes that show how social entrepreneurship is creating jobs, growing the economy, and ultimately changing the world. Mr Haber shows how helping people can lead to better business and more profit. He creates a timeline from the past to now of how the "business of good" was established and has changed over the years, and not always for the better. Then, he provides stories of inspiring young people that are disrupting established norms and changing the world.There is an Introduction - And Now for the Good News - that sets the stage for his premise. Mr. Haber proposes that we have all been impacted by a higher social consciousness, but the story is underreported. Why do we as humans always seem to want to see the bad news, and not the good? His book shines a light on how the prevailing social mood is more positive then we give it credit. His book defines and explains what he calls "The Great Convergence" which is the driving force behind social entrepreneurship.Chapter 1 is The Great Convergence, Chapter 2 is Capitalism 2.0, Chapter 3 is Challenging the Charity Industrial Complex, Chapter 4 is Bottom of the Pyramid, Chapter 5 is the Kickstarters, Chapter 6 is One for One and One for All, Chapter 7 is Rise of the Millennials, Chapter 8 is Failuritus, Chapter 9 is the Gaddafi Lesson, Chapter 10 is the Pale Blue Dot, and there is an Index. Each chapter has a quote that sets the stage for the chapter. The Chapter 2 quote is one that I think represent the entire book: "I would say without hesitation that a new world is within our grasp, filled with unimaginable experiences and possibilities, if only we want it badly enough." (Adrian Veidt).I think this book is more of a call to arms, then a step by step playbook for how to start your own "business of good" (although there are certainly suggestions you can follow). I see it as part autobiography and part biography of those that represent the "Great Convergence." It was an interesting read.
Social entrepreneurship and doing good is a hot topic. After all, who doesn’t want to do a bit of good if they can, whether active business participant or passive consumer. This book takes a look at social entrepreneurship through the eyes of some people who are doing it or trying to do it, providing a fascinating behind-the-scenes and hard objective look at the process.Interviews, case studies and real-world anecdotes are mixed together within this book that puts a fairly positive, upbeat gloss on the benefits of social entrepreneurship, asserting that it is rebooting capitalism and leading to gradual change as well as disruption. Is the author right? Is the capitalist old guard sitting back and letting this upstart take away its power and glory? Yes and no, or partially and not intentionally…In any case, this fresh and often innovative approach certainly has the potential for being a force for good and finding a new and possibly better way of doing things. Reading the book, you can sense the author’s enthusiasm and perhaps awe for the social entrepreneurship movement, yet he manages to keep a sense of perspective and avoid merely repeating a positive, uncritical mantra or stream or fine PR-words. It all led to an interesting, informative read. It could have the potential to enthuse and inspire the reader into considering their own social entrepreneurship venture.The style was a bit mixed and whilst it had some highlights and points of interest it failed to entirely win over this reader. Horses for courses and all of that, but it does not mean it is a bad book but it just failed to be a five-star revolutionary read. Your views may vary and it can be a worthy read for the background knowledge if nothing else and if you then find you’ve got a connection established with it and really start to pull out beneficial advantages you’ve got yourself a winner.
