As someone with lots of Irish blood on both sides of my family, I've read many books of historical fiction about Ireland. Most were very interesting. This trilogy by Ann Moore stands out because it immerses the reader in the daily lives of its characters, the challenges they face, and their relationships with each other. The author has clearly done extensive research because each period and place is brought to life by fine details and historical references. There are passages that have a lyrical quality, as the author captures the exquisite feeling of a moment in time. And the plot lines are rich and intertwined in an intriguing way.I found myself caring about important characters... and even minor characters. Their personalities come alive, especially as you learn about their circumstances. While Gracelin O'Malley is the central figure throughout all three books, the reader comes to know her family and neighbors from her small Irish town who rise up against the British oppressors, one of whom becomes her husband. The Great Potato Famine is presented in its true horror, and we see how it scattered the Irish all over the world. We see the Irish community in New York City, and how they watched out for Gracelin and her family. And we learn what it was like for those who ventured out West, facing many challenges. Gracelin does everything in her power to take care of her children through these journeys. The underlying tension throughout the book is the unknown fate of her brother Sean and her husband Morgan. Will they ever be reunited? No spoilers here, because every page of these novels adds to the richness of the stories told. Well, well worth reading!

Wow - what a tremendous historical fiction trilogy about the survival against all odds by a particular Irish woman named Gracelin O'Malley and her family, friends and neighbors. The courage and strength of this young woman from beginning of her childhood to her middle age is heartening and proves that in hope lies survival. I personally loved the fact that the author deals with all basic human prejudices, not just rich or poor, but also class, race, religion, disabilities, creed, sexism - any and everything people can find to dislike others who are not like them - throughout the Trilogy. Our world could stand a few more people (mothers) with the philosophy of Grace O'Malley. Highly recommended read.

So many books take ugly turns midway through. This book was enjoyable from beginning to end. The love story was a major part of the book, but not the entire book. The history of the Irish coming to this country was educational. The author does a wonderful job making the characters life-like, enjoyable, so much a part of your family that you care what happens to them. Don't let this one go by for it's worth the read.

Reminds me of my Irish family. Toils hardships, laughter and love. All of it held together by my dearest Irish mother. Great read

We have all heard of Ireland's potato famine and immigration to America but not the truly stark reality of it. That was a dark time in history and these books tell of it in dark but courageous detail. Every book needs a hero/heroine and here is the best of them. What Grace goes through with faith, fortitude, courage, strength, and sheer guts is enough for any reader. You get tears, fears, anger, love and loathing all together rolled up in happy an unexpected endings. Have a box of tissues handy, you will enjoy the ride.

Love this book. It was long and went through many generations of tribulations. I can imagine my own Irish ancestors going thru the same journey. It is hard to be.ieve what the Irish went through during the famine and how difficult it was when they got to America. The characters were lively and the story suspenseful.

The 1st book was obviously well-researched...the 2nd somewhat researched...the 3rd not at all. During the 19th century in America, Chinese/Caucasian marriages were against the law--HUGE ERROR! Also, the 3rd book wrapped everything up in an unbelievable way, too pat and symmetrical. Certainly not a series that merits a "re-read"!

What a series this it. Could not stop reading these books. I wanted to keep going from beginning to end and on to the next one. Loved the historical back ground as well. Gave you a feel of what life was like at that time. I understand why those people had to leave Ireland and find a new beginning in America. I will highly recommend these to anyone.
