About the Author

E. E. Cummings (1894–1962) was among the most influential, widely read, and revered modernist poets. He was also a playwright, a painter, and a writer of prose. Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, he studied at Harvard University and, during World War I, served with an ambulance corps in France. He spent three months in a French detention camp and subsequently wrote The Enormous Room, a highly acclaimed criticism of World War I. After the war, Cummings returned to the States and published his first collection of poetry, Tulips & Chimneys, which was characterized by his innovative style: pushing the boundaries of language and form while discussing love, nature, and war with sensuousness and glee. One of the badges of culture I acquired when I was an impressionable eighteen-year-old was "The Complete Poems" of E. E. Cummings. I found a few I liked, most notably "Buffalo Bill's / defunct", but for the most part I was bewildered. Cummings was a poetry god at the time (up there with Robert Frost), and the fact that most of his poems did absolutely nothing for me surely had something to do with my general dismissal of poetry for much of my adult life.Over the past few years, sensing that perhaps I had given poetry short shrift, I have been reading a book of poems every month or so. With a better grounding, I decided to re-visit E. E. Cummings. But my old book of the complete poems from the 1960s was missing from my library shelves, probably appropriated by one of my sons (I wish him well in digesting it). So, in its place, I bought this edition of SELECTED POEMS, edited by Richard S. Kennedy.There is a lot to be said for it. It includes 155 poems. Editor Kennedy groups and presents them according to subject, roughly construed -- for example, "A Child's World", "Love and Its Mysteries", "The Dimensions of Being Human", "Myths and Allegories", and "Targets of Satire". This approach provided me much easier access to Cummings than slogging through the poems in chronological order. Kennedy introduces each of the twelve sections of the book with a short commentary. Together, the commentaries and the brief Introduction make this SELECTED POEMS an ideal vehicle for getting to know Cummings and his poetry. (Moreover, Kennedy no doubt cherry-picked the poems, such that the 155 included here represent the cream of Cummings's oeuvre.)After going through SELECTED POEMS I have a much better appreciation of Cummings and his work. Even so, I still don't like much of it, and some of Cummings's trademark mannerisms remain annoying. I think his experimentation with applying the principles of Cubism (breaking up and restructuring) to poetry was misguided. I don't care for the "visual" approach he employs in some of his poems (to me, poetry as a medium is grounded on sound). Too many of the poems contained in this volume are too much the same; for all his experimentation, Cummings does not display great range in style. The poetry is too choppy (similar to J. D. Salinger's parentheses- and comma-laden prose). Finally, I am more annoyed than ever by Cummings's willful disregard for the conventions of punctuation -- particularly his practice of eliminating the spaces after a comma, semi-colon, or colon, or before and after parentheses. Several poems would have been much more effective without the idiosyncratic and anarchic punctuation (for instance, "O sweet spontaneous").For all that, Cummings had a good grasp of more traditional poetic techniques. He had a genius for word- and phrase-smithing. For example: Spring, "when the world is puddle-wonderful", or "the square virtues and the oblong sins", or "existing's tricky:but to live's a gift". He had a poet's sense of rhythm and rhyme, something that many of his followers in contemporary, experimental verse sorely lacked. (I still think that "Buffalo Bill's / defunct" is one of the finest pieces of free verse ever composed, as well as one of the relatively few that is sublimely poetic.) And, as many of the poems in SELECTED POEMS demonstrate, Cummings handled the sonnet form very well. Here is one such example, written of his exposure in 1917 (while serving as a driver in an ambulance corps) to the Parisian world of brothels and prostitutes:goodby Betty,don't remember mepencil your eyes dear and have a good timewith the tall tight boys at Tabari's,keep your teeth snowy,stick to beer and lime,wear dark,and where your meeting breasts are roundhave roses darling,it's all i ask of you--but that when light fails and this sweet profoundParis moves with lovers,two and twobound for themselves,when passionately duskbrings softly down the perfume of the world(and just as smaller stars begin to huskheaven)you,you exactly paled and curledwith mystic lips take twilight where i know:proving to Death that Love is so and so.

The look and feel of this slim yet powerful volume of poetry is absolutely gorgeous! It’s a beautiful looking book. And, the poems are a journey in and of themselves. The paper feels delicious. And the font is easy to read! Because no matter how beautiful a book may look from the outside, there must be ease of reading that which is on the inside. I rate this particular edition, five stars! Please, it is a must have for your collection.

A perfect selection of poems and just enough background info to give a really clear idea about E.E. cummings and his work. What a genius! I love the way that the reader has to enter his poems in order to even read some of them because of the syntax. Being in the Cummings flow is like being in another mindset and makes you look at reality differently. Very yummy poetry.

Haber gives us an in-depth view of how this business of doing good has evolved and a "how to" map for those who choose this goal.Started by Millenials, it is my personal hope that after reading this relevant and well chronicled account that more companies will adopt this idea.A must read for anyone who cares about making changes in the current world. Haber writes with personal knowledge about this subject. May we have another "greatest generation" in the upcoming future.

Haber nailed it. A must read for all entrepreneurs or anyone wanting to make a difference. His examples in business, government and nonprofits made it such an easy read but completely inspiring at the same time.

An excellent book!

This is a very different book (in a good way) from your typical business case/advice on business publication. The author social entrepreneur Jason Haber intertwines case studies and anecdotes that show how social entrepreneurship is creating jobs, growing the economy, and ultimately changing the world. Mr Haber shows how helping people can lead to better business and more profit. He creates a timeline from the past to now of how the "business of good" was established and has changed over the years, and not always for the better. Then, he provides stories of inspiring young people that are disrupting established norms and changing the world.There is an Introduction - And Now for the Good News - that sets the stage for his premise. Mr. Haber proposes that we have all been impacted by a higher social consciousness, but the story is underreported. Why do we as humans always seem to want to see the bad news, and not the good? His book shines a light on how the prevailing social mood is more positive then we give it credit. His book defines and explains what he calls "The Great Convergence" which is the driving force behind social entrepreneurship.Chapter 1 is The Great Convergence, Chapter 2 is Capitalism 2.0, Chapter 3 is Challenging the Charity Industrial Complex, Chapter 4 is Bottom of the Pyramid, Chapter 5 is the Kickstarters, Chapter 6 is One for One and One for All, Chapter 7 is Rise of the Millennials, Chapter 8 is Failuritus, Chapter 9 is the Gaddafi Lesson, Chapter 10 is the Pale Blue Dot, and there is an Index. Each chapter has a quote that sets the stage for the chapter. The Chapter 2 quote is one that I think represent the entire book: "I would say without hesitation that a new world is within our grasp, filled with unimaginable experiences and possibilities, if only we want it badly enough." (Adrian Veidt).I think this book is more of a call to arms, then a step by step playbook for how to start your own "business of good" (although there are certainly suggestions you can follow). I see it as part autobiography and part biography of those that represent the "Great Convergence." It was an interesting read.

This book takes a look at social entrepreneurship through the eyes of some people who are doing it or trying to do it, providing a fascinating behind-the-scenes and hard objective look at the process.Interviews, case studies and real-world anecdotes are mixed together within this book that puts a fairly positive, upbeat gloss on the benefits of social entrepreneurship, asserting that it is rebooting capitalism and leading to gradual change as well as disruption. Is the author right? Is the capitalist old guard sitting back and letting this upstart take away its power and glory? Yes and no, or partially and not intentionally…In any case, this fresh and often innovative approach certainly has the potential for being a force for good and finding a new and possibly better way of doing things. Reading the book, you can sense the author’s enthusiasm and perhaps awe for the social entrepreneurship movement, yet he manages to keep a sense of perspective and avoid merely repeating a positive, uncritical mantra or stream or fine PR-words. It all led to an interesting, informative read. It could have the potential to enthuse and inspire the reader into considering their own social entrepreneurship venture.The style was a bit mixed and whilst it had some highlights and points of interest it failed to entirely win over this reader. Horses for courses and all of that, but it does not mean it is a bad book but it just failed to be a five-star revolutionary read. Your views may vary and it can be a worthy read for the background knowledge if nothing else and if you then find you’ve got a connection established with it and really start to pull out beneficial advantages you’ve got yourself a winner.

This book is a good introduction and a must-have for recent transplants to the area (such as myself!). The first section deals with the all-important (and extremely complicated) subject of climate. There are eight climatic sub-regions in the Pacific Northwest, each one with unique characteristics."Good Garden Culture" discusses the various types of soils in the region and how to improve them as well as tips on irrigation, mulching, and dealing with plant diseases and pests.The largest portion of the book is a plant directory (Perennials, Shrubs, Vines, Trees) that lists the best plants for the region. A photograph of every plant is included as well as a description and growing requirements. This is where the book will get you into trouble. Although many of the plants that grow here are common elsewhere in the United States, there are exciting temptations for the gardener here like Fuchsias, Cistus (Rock Rose), Grevillea, Choisya (Mexican Orange), Ceonothus (California Lilac), Manzanita (Arctostaphylos) and the list goes on.A final section covers design facets and features photos of many private gardens in the region.This book is a must-have for the Pacific Northwest gardener, full of valuable advice and highly recommended.

Perfect book to read over the winter season. It gives a nice overview of all the climate differences for the sub regions of the PNW and has a really great selection of plants for the garden. I like that it has a good chunk of the usual standbys but also quite a few unusual items that you might only see in collector gardens or specialty nurseries. My only tiny complaint is that the big garden shots don't list out the plants in the picture, but so far 90% of the time I stumble across them in the plant section anyway. Recommended!!

Writing is excellent as it is based on Paul Bonine's extensive observations on our regional climate and weather as they relate to gardening in the Pacific Northwest.He clearly explains conumdrums re:winter survivability-- for example,why some plants which can take cold temperatures do not thrive here. My only "complaint" is that I wish there was more of the book devoted to gardening methodology and not as much to the recommended plants, though that too would be excellent for a gardener not yet familiar with our wonderful regional plant palette.

This is a gorgeous guide to the best of the best plants for the Pacific Northwest. You’d be surprised how many garden books talk about plants but fail to include a picture. This guide has beautiful color photos for every recommended plant—hallelujah! Also, everything grows bigger than in the PNW, so plant tags are often inaccurate for our area. This guide contains more realistic guidelines for how big plants will get in our rainy climate. Highly recommended for the beginner gardener OR the experienced gardener, looking for the perfect addition to their mature garden.

This book is awesome! I bought it after reading a review in the Oregonian. I come from a PNW gardening family and learned a ton from this book. Probably the most helpful tip was to buy a traditional English style garden spade for my tough Willamette valley clay soil. How did I live my life without it?!Great selection of plants and a good section on different garden types (dry garden, Japanese, formal, etc.). We liked it so much we've bought copies as gifts for friends and coworkers.
