Alas I'm surprised I may be the only less than 4 star review. Please don't be mad, folks! I really wanted to like this book. Before reading further you might want to know that I've been an enthusiast of VFX since I was little, I'm an artist and a former architect (I changed careers) and an engineer so I come to this matter with more knowledge than most laypersons. It may be this is a coffee table book meant to give a broad look but there are aspects of the book that argue against a pure coffee table goal, and beyond that it doesn't deliver at least not consistently.First the pros:Obvious enthusiasm for the subject, appreciation for the creativity of filmmakers since the early days and the genius required to accomplish stunning visuals with limited technologyAn overview of the history of special effects from pre-film to recent historySome detail on the techniques at various pointsOccasional diagrams illustrating a techniqueA rich discussion of physical modelmaking techniques and history. Clearly the author loves real models, as do I.ConsInconsistent detail and richness of information, especially in the history sections, but also the techniquesMissing seminal historic moments/films (e.g. The Terminator[1984], a groundbreaking VFX film and the first project of the James Cameron, Stan Winston power team. It gets a little spot in miniature pyrotechnics. Strangely T2 gets a little treatment in both history and techniques but there's no 2nd without the first). The 1980's gets two pages (plus a profile page of Lucas and Spielberg), a decade that advanced VFX possibly moe than any other before it and introduced CG effects as well as the apex of model, motion control, matte and blue/greenscreen techniques. 1990's gets two and the 2000's get four. Some major films just aren't there. I get that a book can't have every film with good VFX, but major turning points where new technology and techniques are developed? C'mon, man.Jurassic Park gets a focal page, but without any real graphic content just text. No model shots, no CGI technique examples. The book discusses procedural animation soon after, what an opportunity to discuss Jurassic Park's animation of T-rex in the rain, oh my god that was mind blowing! Didn't even mention it.Okay some gaps may have been a rights-acquisition problem, but my understanding is that for historic and review content you can use material without a huge license fee.Also, the author frequently uses mediocre examples when a superior film and technique exists (another licensing thing?). I mean, Lost in Space and Independence Day? Geez. That makes the author look like he doesn't actually watch movies and got whatever content/stills/etc. that was cheapest.The realization I've had is that this tome should be broken into two volumes, Volume I History with bold-text references to techniques in Volume II Techniques (in digital format, hyperlinks).The author clearly loves the traditional handmade techniques, and I do too but he should enlist some help filling in the blanks.There's a lot of love in this book for the art and craft of filmaking and its heritage. I just frequently felt like I was hungry for more right when the section or page I was reading ended.

This book is so perfect in what it proposes to be that I feel sorry to not have bought it before. It gives you a wonderfull view of the history of Special Effects and have deep information, that I never found in other books on how they did in the past and how they do today.I am desesperately waiting for a new version of the book and I hope they do a bigger book now. There are more good information that I would like to see in this book.I believe the cover doesn't help because it shows a pinacle of visual effects, but what make this book shines is the Special Effects part.I also would love to have this book in a digital format so I could see the pictures in bigger sizes. I can imagine how wonderfull would be if a digital version of the book, with links to the films and sniplets of scenes.Anyway, even today, in 2013, this book is a must buy for everyone that loves cinema and respect is as the ultimate art.

Wow, I'm blown away by the sheer wealth of information contained in this 384 page tome. The paper stock is great, the printing is good too and the text is thorough. I also like the organization of the book. The book is arranged accordingly:1. The History of Special Effects2. Optical Effects3. Models4. Animation5. Matte Techniques6. Make-Up7. Physical Effects8. SoundA worthy book for the animation and effects/film library.

I bought this book during my freshman year of college for an Intro class, and I still have it today. Not a bad book at all for someone who's very interested in learning historical techniques behind visual/special effects. Some of the sections go into great detail on the most popular effects techniques, and I learned a lot from this book.

Yes there is great history and education in here, but the mass of photographs tells a truly beautiful tale. The artists illustrated here are for the most part the true pioneers of creating magic on film. Going into a project with truly no proven technique must have been terrifying and adrenaline pumping. Our techniques have greatly improved but since the advent of fully cg fx, the pioneering aspect is minimal. It is very well written but I can't call it a page turner since I spent so much time staring at the pictures. Great for fans and professionals alike.

So I bought this as I was teaching myself vfx. After having worked at Weta for 5 years, I can say this is a pretty cool book! It's getting old, but has great info and behind the scenes stuff. I'll be hanging onto it for a long time! Great quality and lots of pictures :)

Then there are those like Abbie Hoffman and Donald Trump that rebel because they can—having no consideration of who it might hurt or the damage it might cause.One quick example comes to mind shutting down the government and furloughing 800,000 federal works and 400,000 federal contract workers. (By the way the federal contracts ate the brunt of the shutdown—no repayment for lost pay.)What do you call 800,000 federal workers and 400,00 federal contractors out of work—budding democrats! ;-)Trump casually goes to Mar-a-Lago and plays golf after he finally declaring national emergency.The crime rate from aliens can’t compare to a month of stats from Chicago—mostly home-grown violence.I had trouble with some of Francesca’s heroes such as Napoleon and Blackbeard. It’s hard to imagine after a day’s pillaging, killing, and looting that he went back to an casual meeting and respected the feelings of his entire crew.While there are probably things we can glean from Napoleon and Blackbeard, I’m not interested in spending a lot of time there—just as I wouldn’t want to spend time learning about leaders of Russia or Saudi Arabia (Their values aren’t humane.)Some of the stories like the one on Captain Sully and Chef Bottura were fascinating and inspiring.While I do believe in diversity I didn’t not like the author’s machine gun use of statistics. I tend to doubt the conclusion of text with massive statistics.I also didn’t glean any sage bits of wisdom for coping with working life. I've been a government contractor for the last 10 years.In general, I found it too scattered to be an inspirational source.

Having once owned a nursery, a friend asked me about setting up her land to start an operation. I tried to tell her it wasn’t as easy as it appeared. This book gives all the downsides and things that could go wrong. Things a neophyte nursery owner doesn’t usually find out until they’ve committed time and money. I highly recommend this to anyone thinking about getting into the nursery business.

Chock full of information and should be required reading for anyone considering the nursery business. Although thorough enough for serious or large scale nurseries, the wisdoms so generously shared in this book are useful, and sometimes applicable to even the smallest backyard nursery. If you are even contemplating starting a nursery, of any size, the best business decision you'll make will be reading this book cover to cover with high lighter in hand. I learned so much from this book, I firmly believe it will pay for itself over and over: by helping me prevent common & potential oversights and mistakes, with time, money and heart ache saving advice, and tips to improve, promote and prosper my business.

Why only 4 stars: I purchased this book with the idea of STARTING a nursery. The classical would-be businessman who wants to start a business from scratch, being not wealthy enough to start a fully-fledged nursery with all the equipment installed and operating in a short while. My expectation was how to start a small business using the space in my yard, and learn to proceed from that point onward, step-by-step. To my surprise, the author has proceeded too quickly to the automation process, the climate control, the mansion-sized greenhouses and all the costly equipment of a factory employing dozens of employees. This has made me lose track too quickly and I didn't follow it up.Why 4 stars: After all, the book describes the challenges of running a nursery in a clear and realistic manner. The wealthier-than-myself reader who has enough land to set-up one, will find this book quite useful. I use organic approaches which largely eliminate most of the pests and diseases, but if you're the more conventional grower, the book may still help you to understand the challenges involved.

This book is indispensable for anyone interested in the topic. It is loaded with information that I for one am extremely grateful the author decided to share with the world. I learned in the time it took to finish this book what would have taken me years of trial and error (likely to be mostly error) on my own. Highly recommended!

Tony Avent owns Plant Delights Nursery, known for its sometimes offensive but always memorable plant catalogs, and the wild selection of unusual plants. Tony's brash, honest, and a straight shooter. If you want to be coddled and told how easy it all will be, look elsewhere as that's not Tony's style.But I laughed out loud nearly every page from his bitingly sarcastic wit and found myself nodding my head as we walked me through the many pitfalls in operating your own nursery, and his reasoning in choosing certain ways to operate over others. The general feeling I get from reading is that if you can make it through this book with your desire to own a nursery intact, then you might just have what it takes to actually operate one.Even if you're just curious about what it's like to own a nursery, like I was, it's an engaging read.

So You Want to Start a Nursery is a must read for any one who has that little idea niggling at the back of their brain that a nursery might be the thing to bring a little extra cash. Don't think for a minute that you can just stick any old fruit trees into the ground and soon you will have mega money flowing in. WRONG!This book is an eye opener in that you have to find the right area on your property, find out what nutrients your soil needs, research the type of trees are suitable for your area, what kind of fertilizers to use (whether you want to organic or not), what kind of pest control you want to use and when and how often to spray, and one of the most important items is learning how to prune your particular kind of tree. Apple, peach, pear and plum are all different.Also, and not a must, is available water for irrigation. While the trees are small and you don't have too many, buckets with holes drilled in the bottom can be used but you will need to figure out something else if you decide to have very many trees and nice big healthy fruit.This little book goes through all phases and is an eye opener for the budding (no pun intended) fruit tree farmer. It has good sound advice and is a nice addition to your gardening library.

When i first got into cloning plants years ago, this was one of the first books that I purchased and read. I think it gives more real life experience, and what to actually do, rather than what it seems like, and what you are hoping. I feel like I learned a lot from reading this book, and it put me on the path of learning other things I did not intend on when starting the reading.Is it necessary for starting a nursery business off? Probably not. But I did enjoy it, and learn from it. What else are books for?

Pizza Pull Apart Bread, page 100 says "16 pizza dough.," missing key measurement (perhaps ounces) and type pre-made, canned dough, etc. Haven't been able to find further information. With that said, this is a great book to have in your "tool box," of recipes. It's clear, well laid out, and very easy to read. The recipes are varied and useable. I'm so happy I have this Instant Mini Pot book.

The Pros----------Recipes are scaled down to the right size for the 3QT Instanpot.Decent selection of recipes.The Cons-----------While the cover has lots of photos, the book itself has no photos and it all black and white.Most recipes can be easily found online for the 6QT Instapot. It isn't hard to simply reduce everything by 1/2.If you want something handy and don't have a phone or tablet, it's worth the $6 I paid for it, but the lack of photos and the pages are pretty plain with a lot of white space, so for that I can only give it 3 stars.

The recipe instructions are so poorly written, that they can't be used. One recipe calls for Cream Mushroom (not cream of mushroom soup) and then in the directions it says to add mushrooms. Don't waste your time or money!

Magnificent Book! A large portion of the formulas are fast and simple. We eat from the cook book something like two times per week!! I have an inclination this will be one of my most utilized cookbooks in my accumulation!

Cheap little paperback. For the price it would be great. I i only gave it 3 stars because the damage it had when we received it. It has a few tips around it. It also it scraped up in the front. I did add a picture to show the damges, though you can't see it as well as you can in person. I would suggest buying this product. Just hopefully yours doesn't come damaged.

This a good buy for a Bible. Yes, the print is small but the product description says it’s only a 7 point font.It’s a good modern translation that is easy to understand, no “thee”, “thou”, etc.Good for reference, regular reading, study and evangelism. You can get a few to give away at this price.

I got these to use in a classroom for a weekly Bible study, and they are just what we needed. The paper is of a lower quality, so it would not stand up to daily use, but that is what I expected.

I needed a bible, and I don't care that the print is small. It was a $3 purchase that arrived in 2 days. Can't beat that.

What I liked the most is the quality of the binding. It should last me quite a while. As far as people whining about the print being so darn small, my 48 year old eyes can read it quite nicely as long as I take my glasses off, but that's the only way I can see anything up close, bigger print included. The reason for three stars instead of five is because it arrived damaged (but useable). Amazon went ahead and credited my debit card without having me send it back.

Bought this for my sister in law so she would have something she can highlight when studying. She likes and it and is using it alot.

Ordered 10 of these to give away, but I think the 7pt font might be too small. will decide this weekend with the others if they are usable for what we wanted.Otherwise the content is great, the translation is great. It just the format... ALSO CBD has these for 2$ shipped... so you can get them cheaper elsewhere.

Good price on this ESV Bible. Just the basics, but it is perfect for my students. However, the print is pretty small. Even my kids are complaining a little about this.
